1457803 Lintels METAL TRIM Ltd 28 Nov 1974 [26 Feb 1974] 8628/74 Heading E1K A hollow metal or plastics lintel for bridging an aperture in a cavity wall is of box section, the rear wall (adjacent the inner skin of the wall) having a continuous channelshaped recess extending longitudinally between one horizontal edge and an abutment formed in the rear wall at a point intermediate its upper and lower edges. The lintel is preferably formed by four sheet-metal members one of which is an upper member 4 of inverted U section, one limb of which forms part of the rear wall and is provided with the channel-shaped recess 12, the lower portion of this providing an abutment in the form of a flange 13 which rests on a flange 15 of a back member 7 which has a second flange 16 resting on a base member 5, the box section being completed by an L section front member 6 having a flange 17, on which rests a flange 10 of the member 4, and a wide horizontal flange 18 resting on the base. The contacting flanges and the base portion are all secured together by welding. The recess 12 receives a wooden fillet to which nails or screws may be fixed when the lintel is in position. Expanded metal or mesh sheet 19 is positioned over the rear and base of the lintel to facilitate the adhesion of mortar. Further provision for keying may be provided as by forming a longitudinally extending recess (20, Fig. 2, not shown) in the upper surface of the member 4 or by forming projections (22, Fig. 3, not shown) on the upper surface of this member and also on the upper surface of the horizontal flange 18.
