A reel stand comprises a first pair of spaced arms 3 supporting a working reel 5; a second pair of spaced arms 4 supporting a replacement reel 6; a common shaft 2 about which the arms 3, 4 can pivot under the action of hydraulic jacks 7; and a pivotable arm 10 carrying a guide roller 12 associated with a web-cutting and splicing device 11. In use, when the reel 5 is almost exhausted, the arm 10 is moved into position 15 and the reel 6 is accelerated so that the splicing of the new web to the running web can be effected by the device 11 which then severs the old web so that the spent reel can be removed from the arms 3 (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown); the empty arms 3 are then pivoted in a clockwise direction into an approximately horizontal position where they can be loaded with another spare reel and the arms 4 are pivoted anticlockwise so that the reel 6 is moved into the working position (Fig. 9, not shown), the arms 3 and 4 moving past each other during this operation. When reel 6 is itself exhausted a similar change-over sequence is effected (Figs. 10 to 13, not shown), so that the arms 3 and 4 again occupy the position shown in Fig. 1. The arms 3 are preferably longer than the arms 4, and the arms may be mounted on separate shafts (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
