Abstract

A web winding machine is provided with a loader adapted to receive and support a plurality of empty horizontally disposed reels which are successively loaded into a device for transfer from the loading location to a winding location. As shown, a loader for a winding machine of the "Pope" type comprises a pair of horizontal parallel bars 45 which engage the respective ends of empty reels 21 supported by the bars (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). Chaindriven feeding members 55 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) urge the reels along the bars so that the endmost reel abuts against a pair of upwardlyprojecting members 59 loading arms 62 are movable to lift the endmost reel above the abutment members 59 and then lower that reel into reception by transfer arms 15 which can be operated to transfer the reel from the loading location to a winding location defined by a driven roller 13. When the diameter of the wound roll 29 reaches a desired value the arms 15 move the empty reel to engage the drive roller 13 so that the reel is brought up to speed pressure arms 31 are then moved so that the wound roll 29 is brought out of contact with the drive roller 13, the consequent slowing down of the wound roll causing a free loop of web 35 to be formed between the wound roll and the rotating empty reel. Air jets from nozzles 39 direct this loop to wrap around the empty reel when the web 35 then tears to separate the wound roll from the incoming web. With the winding of the empty reel thus initiated, the pressure arms transfer the wound roll 29 to a temporary storage position 40 from which the roll passes to a braking position 41 and then return to engage the new reel the transfer arms 15 then disengage that reel and return to the loading location to receive another empty reel from the arms 62, the movement of the arms 31, 15 and 62 being automatically controlled in timed relation to the winding cycle.
