Abstract
1,012,357. Two-part couplings. AMP. Inc. March 12, 1964 [March 21, 1963], No. 10418/64. Heading H2E. In a coaxial cable connector, the inner contact pin 40 is held coaxially in the outer shell 30 by an insulating insert 36 and is crimped at the central region C 2 to grip the cable core 110, access for the crimping tool being provided by ports 34 in the outer conductor and recesses 38 in the insert. Suitably shaped dies crimp pin 40 to the cable core, pressure being transmitted by the thin insulating layer of insert to the pin without piercing the layer. The outer shell 30 has a rear extension 50 of reduced diameter and with annular serrations 52 over which the cable braid 104 is crimped by a sleeve 60. Extension 50 has a flange 54 (Fig. 4) at the rear end to take a grooved sealing grommet 70 (Fig. 5, not shown). Sleeve 60 supports and grips by crimping the outer insulating sleeve 102 of the cable; the crimping also distorts grommet 70 to effect a seal with flange 54 and the cable dielectric 106, thereby preventing ingress of moisture or corrosive media into the connector via the cable braid. The forward ends of the connector are shaped to mate with a complementary connector 80, a disc seal 18 of resilient material being forced thereby against pin 40 and a shoulder 16.
