Abstract

820,243. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. June 5, 1957 [June 5, 1956], No. 17896/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A U-shaped ferrule 10 is provided with grooves 20 and is crimped round a conductor 12 having an insulating layer 14 and a wire 16 having an insulating film by means of a die and anvil, the shape of which varies the crimping pressure progressively along a part of the ferrule including at least one groove to extrude conductor 16 and move insulation 18 to expose contact areas 38, 40 between the ferrule and conductor. The cross-sectional area of the conductor thus varies progressively over a length of the ferrule including at least one groove. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, connector 10<SP>1</SP> tapers over only a single length including several grooves 20<SP>1</SP> when it has been crimped, and connects a stranded conductor 12<SP>1</SP> having an insulating layer 10<SP>1</SP> and a solid conductor which also tapers having an insulating film 18<SP>1</SP>. In the embodiment of Fig. 8, the connection is between two solid conductors 42, 44 and the crimping pressure decreases progressively outwards from the centre, and the crimped connector and the solid conductors taper from the centre in the completed connections. The anvil, Fig. 6, has a raised central portion 24 and forces the ferrule into a die 32. Specification 754,493, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
