Abstract
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von elektrisch leitenden Nickeloxidoberflächen aus Nickel enthaltendem Material, wobei die Nickeloberfläche zunächst entfettet wird, anschließend für ca. 10 min. in einer ca. 1% Salzsäurelösung aufgeraut wird, wobei durch Zugabe von Wasserstoffperoxidlösung der Vorgang beschleunigt wird und sich eine grünliche Färbung des Elektrolyten bemerkbar macht, die Nickeloberfläche kurz gewässert wird, das Nickelmaterial in eine Lösung aus 3,5 molarer Alkalilauge, versetzt mit ca. 10% Wasserstoffperoxid, gegeben und dort für 10 Minuten aufbewahrt wird, die sich so gebildete Nickelhydroxidoberfläche in einem anschließenden thermischen Prozess entwässert wird und anschließend zum Nickeloxid weiter oxidiert wird. Sie umfasst ferner die Grenzleitschicht, die nach dem Verfahren hergestellt wird, sowie die Elektroden daraus und die Verwendung in Verfahren der Chlor-Alkali-Elektrolyse, in Brennstoffzellen und in Akkumulatoren.
Description
- Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung leitfähiger Nickeloxidoberflächen durch chemische Dotierung des Nickeloxids mit Alkalioxiden, insbesondere für den Einsatz des Nickels in elektrochemischen Anwendungen.
- Bei elektrochemischen Prozessen werden chemische Umsetzungen durch einen äußeren elektrischen Strom geregelt. Innerhalb der elektrochemischen Zellen muß ein leitfähiger, stabiler und preisgünstiger Leiter die Elektronen transportieren. Dabei hat sich Nickel als ein idealer Werkstoff für die Elektroden herausgestellt. Nachteilig ist jedoch die Bildung von schlecht oder nicht leitenden Nickeloberflächen, wenn die Elektroden oberhalb des Nickelhydroxidpotentials betrieben werden. Wegen der geringen Höhe dieses Potentials tritt die Hydroxidbildung in vielen Prozessen auf.
- Diese schlecht oder nicht leitenden Hydroxidschichten sind zum Beispiel hinderlich, wenn reines Nickel als Sauerstoffentwicklungselektrode bei der Elektrolyse eingesetzt wird. Aber auch in Systemen, bei denen Nickel als leitfähiges Gewebe, Streckmetall oder Blech mit katalytisch aktivem Material wie Kohlenstoff, platiniertem Kohlenstoff etc. in Verbindung kommt, wirkt sich die isolierende Schicht negativ aus. So verhindern die Hydroxidschichten auch bei Sauerstoffverzehrelektroden einen optimalen Stromfluss.
- Durch die ohmschen Verluste an der Oberfläche des Nickels verschlechtert sich der Wirkungsgrad des ganzen Systems, wie zum Beispiel Zink/Luft- und Nickel/Metallhydrid-Batterien, Sauerstoffkathoden bei der Chlor-Alkali-Elektrolyse oder die Sauerstoffelektroden in alkalischen Brennstoffzellen.
- Es ist bekannt, daß Nickeloberflächen mit Hilfe von mechanischen Verfahren aufgerauht werden, um einen besseren elektrischen Kontakt zwischen Nickel und anderen Bestandteilen der Elektrode wie zum Beispiel Aktivkohle zu erzeugen. Jedoch nimmt der zunächst geringere elektrische Widerstand im Betrieb sehr schnell zu, weil sich die Nickeloberfläche mit dem nichtleitenden Nickelhydroxid überzieht.
- Ein anderes Verfahren ist die mehrstündige Reduktion einer kompletten Elektrode. Vor allem bei Nickel, das in direktem Kontakt mit Kohlenstoff steht, führt die Reduktion nicht nur zur Entfernung der nichtleitenden Oberfläche, sondern auch zu ei ner relativ stabilen Verbindung zwischen dem metallischen Nickel und dem Kohlenstoff. Nachteilig bei diesem Verfahren ist, daß es zum Beispiel nicht möglich ist, die Luftelektrode – bestehend aus Aktivkohle, Mangandioxid und Nickelgewebe – einer fertigen Zink/Luft-Batterie für einige Stunden beim Wasserstoffpotential zu reduzieren.
- In offenen Systemen ist dieses Verfahren möglich, allerdings wären die so erzeugten Verbindungen von Nickel und Kohlenstoff nicht besonders stabil. Speziell bei der Sauerstoffentwicklung müsste spätestens nach einem Monat die Reduktion wiederholt werden, weil sich eine neue Nickelhydroxidschicht zwischen der Aktivkohle und dem Nickelgewebe aufgebaut hätte.
- Es ist bekannt, daß die schlecht leitfähigen Nickeloxide durch einen geringen Anteil von Lithiumoxid einen deutlichen Anstieg der Leitfähigkeit aufweisen [P.J. Fensham, J. Amer. Soc., 76, 969 (1954) Löslichkeit von Li2O]. Zum Aufbringen sind jedoch sehr hohe Temperaturen erforderlich. Für elektrochemische Anwendungen werden aber komplizierte Nickelteile, wie zum Beispiel Gewebe, Streckmetalle oder Batteriebecher benötigt, die keiner großen Temperaturbelastung ausgesetzt werden dürfen, weil sie sich ansonsten zu sehr verformen könnten.
- Es weiterhin Lösungen für die Beschichtung von Glas mit leitfähigem Nickeloxid bekannt, bei dem Lithium zudotiert wird und so eine elektrisch leitfähige Beschichtung entsteht. Dies wird bei Kopierern aber auch bei technischen Gläsern eingesetzt. Ein Nachteil dieser Verfahren ist wiederum die hohe Temperatur, wie in der
DE 692 12 528 beschrieben]. - In der Batterietechnologien ist die Leitfähigkeit des Nickels sowohl für die alkalischen Akkumulatoren vom Typ Nickel/Cadmium als auch für den Typ Nickel/Metallhydrid, wie in
DE 697 21 136 beschrieben, wichtig. Bei den Lithiumbatterien ist der Einbau von Lithium in Nickel ebenfalls bekannt, siehe hierzu auch dieDE 691 24 158 . - Neben diesen Hochtemperaturverfahren ist auch ein Niedertemperaturverfahren bekannt, bei dem eine aktive Nickelelektrode durch die Behandlung in einer Mischung aus KOH, NAOH, BaOH und Wasserstoffperoxid verbessert wird. Hierbei wird allerdings die Behandlung einer aktiven Elektrode beschrieben – nicht also die Behandlung von reinen, metallischen Oberflächen.
- Die Lösung der Aufgabe besteht darin, ein Verfahren zur Verfügung zu stellen, welches es ermöglicht, bei niedriger Temperatur leitfähige Nickeloxidoberflächen durch chemische Dotierung des Nickeloxids mit Alkalioxiden herzustellen.
- Diese Aufgabe wird durch das Verfahren nach Patentanspruch 1 gelöst. Die Erfindung löst die Aufgabe, indem
- • die Nickeloberfläche zunächst entfettet wird,
- • anschließend für ca. 10 min. in einer ca. 1% Salzsäurelösung aufgerauht wird, wobei
- • durch Zugabe von Wasserstoffperoxidlösung der Vorgang beschleunigt wird und sich eine grünliche Färbung des Elektrolyten bemerkbar macht,
- • die Nickeloberfläche kurz gewässert wird,
- • das Nickelmaterial in eine Lösung aus 3,5 molarer Alkalilauge, versetzt mit ca. 10% Wasserstoffperoxid gegeben und dort für 10 Minuten aufbewahrt wird,
- • die sich so gebildete Nickelhydroxidoberfläche in einem anschließenden thermischen Prozeß entwässert wird
- • und anschließend zum Nickeloxid weiter oxidiert wird.
- Die so erzeugten, dotierten Nickeloxidoberflächen werden im Folgenden als Grenzleitschichten bezeichnet und besitzen eine hervorragende Leitfähigkeit.
- Bei der Gabe des Nickelmaterials in die Lösung aus 3,5-molarer Alkalilauge tritt eine lebhafte Oxidation des Nickels auf, wobei gleichzeitig Alkaliionen eingebaut werden. Es lassen sich sowohl Kalilauge als auch Natronlauge oder Lithiumhydroxidlösung als Alkalilauge einsetzen.
- In einer Ausgestaltung des Verfahrens werden bei der Gabe des Nickelmaterials in die Lösung aus 3,5-molarer Alkalilauge auch noch kolloidaler Kohlenstoff oder auch Hydroxide des Eisens, Cobalts, Titans, Iridiums oder Platins zugegeben. In weiteren Ausgestaltungen des Verfahrens erfolgen die Entwässerung und die weitere Oxidation bei einer Temperatur von 180 °C. In einer weiteren Ausgestaltung des Verfahrens enthält das eingesetzte Nickel Zulegierungen von 50 Gewichtsprozent Aluminium oder auch 10 Gewichtsprozent Titan oder auch beide Aluminium und Titan gleichzeitig.
- Die Erfindung wird im Folgenden an 2 Beispielen näher erläutert. Beispiel 1 zeigt die Auswirkung der Nickeloberfläche auf die Strom/Spannungscharakteristik von Luftelektroden in alkalischen Elektrolyten anhand von
1 und2 , Beispiel 2 zeigt die Möglichkeiten der Dotierung auf. - Beispiel 1: In
1 ist aufgetragen, welchen Einfluß die Oberfläche von Nickelableitern auf die elektrochemische Belastbarkeit von Luftelektroden hat. Es wurden als katalytisch aktives Material eine Mischung aus Aktivkohle und Kohlenstoff nach einem „reactive mixing" Verfahren hergestellt. Anschließend wurde die Masse in einen metallischen Ableiter eingewalzt. In1 sind die elektrochemischen Werte für unbehandeltes Nickel, reduziertes Nickel, Nickel mit einer Grenzleitschicht und Silber eingetragen. Sehr deutlich ist der enorme Leistungsgewinn zu beobachten, wenn anstelle von üblichem Nickelgewebe ein Nickelgewebe mit Grenzleitschicht eingesetzt wird. Die Leistung der Luftelektrode ist dann vergleichbar mit Luftelektroden auf einem Silberableitermaterial. - Ein ähnliches Bild stellt sich dar, wenn anstelle des Kohlenstoffs Silber als aktives Material eingesetzt wird. Weil der Silberkatalysator selbst an der Leitfähigkeit teilnehmen kann, sind die Auswirkungen der Nickelkorrosion nicht so erheblich wie in
1 dargestellt. Aber der positive Einfluss der dotierten Nickeloxidschichten bleibt bestehen, wie in2 dargestellt. - Beispiel 2: Nickeloxid ist ein bekannter Katalysator für die Sauerstoffentwicklung. Daher wird oft ein Raney-Nickel-Katalysator in Elektrolyseanlagen eingesetzt. Nun sind Bedingungen bekannt, bei denen die Sauerstoffentwicklungselektrode einen möglichst kleinen elektrolytischen Widerstand aufweisen soll. In diesem Fällen wird bisher als Katalysator ein beschichtetes Nickelgewebe mit Iridiumoxid eingesetzt.
- Mit den hier vorgestellten dotierten Grenzleitschichten ist ein gezielter Einbau von weiteren Katalysatoren als Nickeloxid möglich. So können durch Zugabe von Cobalt, Eisen, Iridium oder Platin bei der Bildung der Hydroxidschichten diese Schichten zusätzlich mit katalytisch aktiven Materialien dotiert werden. Durch Variation der Einwirkzeit wird die Dicke der Grenzleitschicht festgelegt. Werden auf diese Weise Nickelgewebe beschichtet, so ist ein wesentlich geringerer elektrolytischer Widerstand erreicht worden, als er zum Beispiel in Raney-Nickel-Gasdiffusionselektroden vorliegt. Die geringe Temperatur, bei der die Nickeloxidoberflächen hergestellt werden, führt hierbei zu sehr aktiven Nickelkatalysatoren.
- Die erfindungsgemäßen Grenzleitschichten sind sowohl bei der Chlor-Alkali-Elektrolyse als auch in Brennstoffzellen und Akkumulatoren als Elektroden vorteilhaft einsetzbar.
Claims (7)
- Verfahren zur Herstellung von elektrisch leitenden Nickeloxidoberflächen aus Nickel enthaltendem Material, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass • die Nickeloberfläche zunächst entfettet wird, • anschließend für ca. 10 min. in einer ca. 1 % Salzsäurelösung aufgerauht wird, wobei • durch Zugabe von Wasserstoffperoxidlösung der Vorgang beschleunigt wird und sich eine grünliche Färbung des Elektrolyten bemerkbar macht, • die Nickeloberfläche kurz gewässert wird, • das Nickelmaterial in eine Lösung aus 3,5 molarer Alkalilauge, versetzt mit ca. 10% Wasserstoffperoxid gegeben und dort für 10 Minuten aufbewahrt wird, • die sich so gebildete Nickelhydroxidoberfläche in einem anschließenden thermischen Prozeß entwässert wird • und anschließend zum Nickeloxid weiter oxidiert wird.
- Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass bei der Gabe des Nickelmaterials in die Lösung aus 3,5-molarer Alkalilauge auch noch kolloidaler Kohlenstoff oder auch Hydroxide des Eisens, Cobalts, Titans, Iridiums oder Platins zugegeben werden.
- Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Entwässerung und die weitere Oxidation der gebildeten Nickelhydroxidoberfläche bei einer Temperatur von 180 °C durchgeführt wird.
- Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das eingesetzte Nickel Zulegierungen von 50 Gewichtsprozent Aluminium oder auch 10 Gewichtsprozent Titan oder auch beide Aluminium und Titan gleichzeitig enthält.
- Grenzleitschicht, hergestellt nach einem der Verfahren gemäß den Ansprüchen 1 bis 4.
- Elektrode, enthaltend eine Grenzleitschicht gemäß Anspruch 5.
- Verwendung einer Elektrode gemäß Anspruch 6 in einem Verfahren der Chlor-Alkali-Elektrolyse, in Brennstoffzellen oder in Akkumulatoren.
