GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADAM REED, citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and .State of California., have invented new and useful Im provements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to garbage receptacles; and it contemplates the provision of a receptacle constructed with a View of holding garbage in a sanitary manner and so that prowhng animals cannot gain access tothe same, and one adapted to ermit of the garbage being transferred wit facility to a collection wagon.

Other advantageous features of the invention will be ,fully understood from the fol- -lowing description and claims when the same l are read in connection with the accompanying drawings,formingpart of this specifi/cation, in winch:

Figure 1 is a view illustrating the well and bucket of my improvements together with a s block c on said arm, and a cable garbage-collecting wagon equipped with apparatus for raising the bucket and swinging 1t over a fence to a point where 1t can be conveniently dumped in the Wagon. Fig. i2 is aA vertical section showing the bucket as inclosed in the Well. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 -3 vof-.Fig 2, looking downward. C is the well of my novel receptacle which -is preferably of cement `with a view'ofwithstanding the action of chemicals in the earth, though 1t may be of galvanized iron or any other suitablematerial when conditions permit. The said well O is preferably,l though not necessarily. shaped as shown in crosssection; and in one arrangement it is sunk in the earth at' the inner side of the fence A, with its flat side adjacent to the fence as shown. The lower and upper ends of the well C are, open, and in the front wall of the well a staple f is embedded so that it extends above the up er end of the wall after the manner best s own in Fig. 2. portion the staple f is rovided with lateral arms f ldesigned to ho d it in the cement of the well, while in the upper or exposed portion of the staple an eye f2 is formed for a purpose presently .set forth. At its lower end, the well C has fixed in or to it', rods C which extend laterally from said end and are designed to serve as anchors calculated to ef'l'ectually prevent an unscrupulous person from raising the -well and carrying the same away.

The lock g is employed when the receptacle is placed 1n front of a house l at Athe inner side -of a curb, this with a view of'preventing'mischievous boys raising the cover and gaining access to the contents of the bucket, presently described. When the receptacle is located in a backyard at the inner side of a fence as before described,

At this point it will be noted t at WhileI the staple f cooperating with a lock or fastener may be depended on to prevent dogs and cats from raising the cover, yet when a person desires to open the cover the same may be readily accomplished On its lower after the lock or fastener is removed from the eye of the staple.

The hinges D2 employed in the connection I of the'cover D to the well C respectively com prise members g pivoted together and embedded in the well and cover, each of the said members being provided with lateral arms g2 designed to lend strength to the connection between the memberand the cement or anal ogous material.

E is the bucket of the receptacle which is preferably iron. The said bucket is designed to rest on two blocks h, of wood or other material, positioned at the bottom of the well or on the rods C before described, whereby the bucket is held out of contact with the earth in order to prevent deteriora` tion of the bucket, and when the soil is sandy, the bottom of the bucket is perforated,l as indicated by i in order to enable'liquids to drain away Jfrom the solid` or semi-solid garbage. When, however, the soil is of a clay nature the bottom of the bucket will be made imperforate for obvious-reasons. At its upper end the bucket E is provided with an outwardly-extending, horizontal flange F, and this fia-nge is designed to rest close down on a shoulder j in the. upper portion of the well C with a view of elosinl the upper end of the space between the bucket and well and in that way precluding the deposit of arbage in said space when a person is care ess in dum ing garba e into'the receptacle.

. On t e bucket is a hinged bail G which is designed in its lower position to rest below the flange F of the bucket E so as not to interfere with the tight closing ofthe cover D. The said bail G is provided in order that thebucket E may be lifted out of the well C either by hand, or through thel medium of the equipment on the wagon B shown in Fig. 1 as before described.

This loop may be used for the engagement of a hook held in the hand, or for the engagement of the hook on the cable d when it is desired to employ the apparatus shown in Fig. 'l in raising or loweringr the bucket.

It will be gathered from the foregoing that my novel garbage receptacle is practically air-tight and is therefore not liable to dissarees seminate noxious odors; also, that vermin and prowling dogs are efiectually prevented from gaining access to and feeding upon the garbage. it will further be gathered that the air space intermediate the Well and the bucket will lessen liability of the garbage freezing, and that there is no likelihood of the i bucket being upset and scattering its contents over tno ground. Notwithstanding' this latter it wili be apparent that the bucket may be expeditiously removed fromand reclaim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: i I

2. A garbage receptacle comprising a well of cement, a cover of cement having a rein#v forcing layer of reticulated material'- ernbedded therein and also having an opening, hinges connecting the well and cover and having members embedded in the well and cover, and lateral arms on said members, and a stapie embedded in and extending above the weil in position to extend through the opening in the cover and having lateral arms on its lower portion and an eye in its upper portion.

3. A garbage receptacle comprising a well of cement, a cover of cement having a reinforcing layer of reticulated material embedded therein, hinges connecting the well andcover and having members embedded in the Well and cover and lateral arms on said members, and means for fastening the cover 1 in its closed position.
