Description

(No Model.)
J. H. ETHRIDGE.
DUST BOX. No. 347,701. Patented Aug. 17, 1886.
V O .2! 0 AJ i 00 Q 00 l T ii I H UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. 'ETHRIDGE, OF PALUXY, TEXAS.
DUST-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,701, dated August 17, 1886,
7 Application filed May 17, 1886. Serial No. 202,375. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ETHRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paluxy, in the county of Hood and State of Texas, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Dust-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, which form apart of thisspecification, and in which Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a floor of a building provided with my improved dust-box. Fig. 2 is a top view of the box with the door in the floor opened. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the box; and Fig. 4 is a view of the box lifted out of its seat in the floor and provided with its removable lid for covering it while being carried to be emptied.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to dust-boxes adapted to be placed in the floor of a building, between the joists and below the floor, and covered by a suitable lid flush with the floor; andit consistsin the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A indicatethe joists of the floor; and B is the floor, which has adoor, G, flush with its surface.
The pan D or box is composed of a bottom, E, having inclined sides F, the upper edges of which are bent outward to form flanges G, and two of these flanges, at opposite sides of the box, are provided with re-enforcing strips or bars H H, which rest upon the joists of the floor, supporting the box. Two strips, I I, having their upper ends bent inward, are secured to the sides of the box upon their inner sides, and form handles,by means of which the box may be raised out of its seat when it is its seat in the floor and conveyed to a place where it maybe emptied.
It will be seen that the door, which is preferably hinged at one edge, will cover the box, forming a portion of the floor, and during sweeping of the floor the door may be opened, and the open box will receive the dust from the floor as it is swept into it.
When the box is full,it may be lifted out of its seat in the floor by the inwardly-bent ends of the strips, which form handles, and the removable lid may be placed upon the box, whereupon it may be carried off and emptied.
It follows that the floor may thus be swept free from every particle of dust, as all the dust will be swept from the floor to a level below it, and the sweeping of the dust into the box instead of into a common dust-pan will be accomplished easier and with better results.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States V 1. A dust-box consisting of a square bottom having inclined sides formed with outwardlyprojecting flanges, and having reenforcing strips secured to the under sides of the flanges, and with inwardly-bent strips secured to the inner sides of the box, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. Thecombination, with a floor having an aperture cut into it and provided with a door flush with the surface of the floor, of a dustbox having a square bottom and diverging sides formed with outwardly-projecting flanges, reenforced upon their under sides by plates or bars and having strips secured to the inner sides, having their upper ends bent inward, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. ETHRIDGE.
