GARBAGE OR RUBBISH RECEPTACLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,990, dated October 27, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, CLIFFORD ARRICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident .of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage or Rubbish Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to rubbish and garbage receptacles, and to that class thereof which are adapted for public and private use; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be employed in a house, or on the streets, or in public buildings and ofiices.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciiication, of which the accompanying drawings forni a part, in whieh- Figure l is a perspective view showing one side and the front of my improved garbage and rubbish receptacle, and Fig. 2 a central vertical transverse section thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a box or receptacle which is preferably composed of galvanized iron, and which will weigh from twenty to forty pounds, the weight being governed by the size required, and the size thereof being determined by the use to which it is put. This box or receptacle is coniposed of two sides A and B, a front C, and a back D, and the upper rear portion of the back is preferably curved, as shown at CZ.

Arranged transversely of the front and at the top thereof is an opening E, from the bottom of which projects inwardly and downwardly an inclined plate F, and at the back of the casing, opposite the opening E, is another downwardly-inclined plate G, below the front edge of which is a transverse shaft H, on which is mounted a plate K, and to said shaft is secured a weight L, the object of which is to hold the plate K in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, in which position it extends downwardly, and the front edge thereof strikes against the inner edge of the inclined plate F, and 'a spring may be substituted for the weight L, if desired.

At the lower side of the front is a hinged door L, which is adapted to openv outwardly, and which is hinged at its upper side, and said hinged door L is provided with a spring lock or catch M,- of any desired form or construction, and extending from the upper portion of the back of the box or casing to the bottom of the front thereof is an inclined or curved plate or partition O.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The garbage, rubbish, or any other substances are thrown into the box or casing through the opening E, and, striking upon the hin ged plate K, depress the same and pass into the bottom of the box or casing, and may be removed therefrom, whenever desired, through the door L, and this operation of removing the rubbish or garbage is facilitated by the inclined or curved plate O.

Instead of forming the door L in the front of the box or casing I may place it at the back thereof, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in this event the plate B will be connected with the upper part of the front and extended downwardly and backwardly, as is also shown in dotted lines in said figure. The object of this construction is to provide means whereby the garbage-receptacle may be placed in or secured to a fence, so that the opening F. will be on one side and the door L on the other.

It will be understood that the action of the hinged plate K is automatic, said plate returning to the closed position, after the rubbish or other articles have been thrown into the box or easing, by the operation of the weight L, or a spring or other device may be employed for this purpose.

My invention is not limited to tlie exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof as shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the Invention.

I also provide handles P, which maybe secured to the opposite side of the casing, and by means of which it may be carried from point to point orhandled, when it is desired to empty the same, and my improved box or ICO receptacle will be found to be of great convenience. Y

Vhen used in the streets, the refuse which is usually scraped into piles and left to be scattered by the wind and by passing vehicles may be deposited therein, and, as will be understood, the garbage, refuse, and various articles may be emptied therefrom into a cart much more easily and quickly than the same can be shoveled into a cart from piles along the street, as is the ordinary custom, and when used in the house or public building the danger of fire is largely reduced for the reason that hot ashes or live coals,

which are usually deposited in barrels or similar articles, may be placed therein, and the use of my improved box or receptacle will also occasion much less dust and other inconveniences than result from the use of barrels, boxes, and similar receptacles, which are now employed.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A garbage-receptacle, consisting of a box or other receptacle having an opening in the front near the top, a plate `lixed transversely between the sides of the box with its upper edge at the bottom of the said front opening and its lower edge extending inward and downward, a second inclined plate fixed transversely and against the back of the box on the inside thereof, a shaft or rod xed transversely in the box at the front and lower edge of said second plate; a swinging plate secured to said shaft and a counterbalanee weight or spring thereon adapted to hold said swinging plate normally closed with its front edge in contact with the rear edge of the iirst inclined plate; a door to close the discharge- 4openings in the box and a curved plate arranged to deiect or direct the contents of the box toward the door; all constructed and ar ranged as herein shown and described.
