Description

UNITED STATES PATENT riucn.
JAMES J. SLEVIN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
GARBAGE-RECEIVER.
UPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,235, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed May 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. SLEVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receivers, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to an improved garbage-receiver, adapted to be placed on sidewalks in front'of the most fashionable and public buildings, and it is so arranged that there shall be no necessity for any annoyance on account of any unsightliness or efflnvia which may be caused to arise from the substances deposited in said receivers.
The nature of my invention will be fully explained by the following specification and claims and the drawings annexed, which form part of the same.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the apparatus, shown upon a section of sidewalk. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on the line 2 z of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the outer casing and conductor separately. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the receiver.
In each of the views similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.
A represents the sidewalk, and B the garbage-receiver, which is inclosed in a removable casing, O. The receiver B, I prefer to be of a tapering form, as shown, and constructed of galvanized iron or other suitable metal. It may, however, be constructed of wood, paper, or other material. On opposite sides of the receiver B, I arrange handles 0, to facilitate the removal of the same and the dumping of its contents. The casing O is supported on legs 0 c, which I prefer to be arranged in such manner that their respective lengths shall insure the casing O a practically vertical position, which it otherwise would not have, owing to the inclination of thesidewalk A. The casing G, at its upper extremity, is curved over, as shown at D, and returned in the form of a funnel, E, adapted to pass within the receiver B when the casing C is in position, as, shown by Fig. 3. The funnel E is formed inclined, leaving a chamber, F, between its internal surface and the interior surface of the wall of the casing C, so that the upper part of the receiver B may be contained in the said chamber F. The area of the funnel E is such that it can only contain sufficient garbage to fill the receiver B when the casing G is removed.
G is a hinged cover, of semi globular form, adapted to shut down closely upon the curvedover portion D of the casing O, as shown by .Fig. 1, and by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The
hinged cover G is held in a proper position when open by means of a chain, one end of which is attached to a loop, 9, in the center of the inside of the cover G, while its opposite end is attached to the funnel E, as shown clearly by Fig. 3. The chain 9 is of just sufficient length to allow the hinged cover to be balanced and remain open while garbage is being thrown into the receiver, but so that by very slight effort the cover G may be turned down into a closed position. The form of the cover G not only prevents rain or snow from remaining on the same and running into the receiver B, but it prevents persons from getting wet from such accumu lations when opening the cover. 7
The construction of the cover G, in combination with the form of the curved-over part D of the casing 0, 'forms a very convenient and perfect seal to prevent any foul air or gases arising from the garbage in the receiver from annoying passcrs-by as well as residents or occupants of the buildings adjacent.
On the exterior of the casing O, I form or attach handles 0 for the purpose of enabling the garbagegatherers to lift the same into and out of position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. The combination, with a removable garbage-receiver casing, of an internal feedingfunnel, substantially as and for the purpose stated.
2. The combination, with a removable garbage-receiver casing, of an internal feedingfunnel and a removable cover, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
3. The combination of a garbage-receiver In witness whereof I have hereunto set my IO hand this 29th day of April, 1884.
JAMES J. SLEVIN.
