Application filed June 18, lsccfiserlel No. 429,162.
To all whom'it may concern;
Be it known that l, Josnnn M. Tnmnns, it citizen of the United States, end it resident of Chicsgo, nois, have invented certin new end useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of
I which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garbage receptacles and the object of my invention is to provide an improved garbage recentscle edsspted to be arranged at a. back fence in such a. manner as to permit s ready sccess thereto from either side oflhe fence, from one side to place refuse therein and from the outside to remove the some therefrom.
A further objecto'f my invention is to provide 2. device as mentioned which shall remain closed except when piecing the refuse therein or removing it thelfionl, to keep oiit the sun, llies and animals and which shell in at large measure prevent the escape of od'ors.
A further object of my inventicnis to provide a garlic e receptacle heving e11 open end extending t rough the fence and so constructed that it will not drsin the liquid por tions either into the alley or the are, on one which will last indefinitely W thout be coming leaky.
Other objects will eppesr hereinafter.
My invention will he more readily uncles stood reference to the cccmnen i "mining it part s acificeticn "'.vhicl1,'
Figure l e perspective view of receptacle e ilzcdying my invi preferred gsrbege on in-its sl longi- .iligi is e v tndincl sect the same, e A g. 3 is e. similar view of it slightly modified ionn.
The srbege receptacle comprises e sol}- stsntiel y iectenguler box 1 heving its outer end 5?; open for its full extent between the top wall 3, the bottom i and the side wells 5, The top Well 3 is perellel with bottom l err-lends out e short dist. e from e front or outer end '2 end the Lip-tier edges c. the side Wells incline dcwntverd 3 there from, as at 6, to the rest well 8 indicates etrens'vets Wooden member or strip arranged along the inner ed gs of the Well 8 and forming on extension thereof. The box 1 is formed of cement and the upper edges of thewsl ls ere recessed zit to L the inner end of the Well 3 to receive the ends county of Cook, and State of llliolthe strip 8. The strip 8 is preferably molded in place when the device is formed and to this end its edge edjacentto the well 3 is provided with. tie members 10 to hold it securely in place. These are preferably nails partially driven into the strip and which are embedded in the Wall 3. I
The box is entirely closed except for the 01311 end 2 and the opening 11 in the top W ch extends from the strip 8 to the Well 7, which openings are closed by the metal doors l2 and 13 respectively the letter of which is hingedly connected escy the hi-n es ld to the strip 8. The bottom-face l oft .ie bottom is preferably level or horizontal end its inn i1 face or 11 per fees is preferably downwoi' y inclined om the oneningQ to revent the-- fluid ortion o-fthe refuse from eeking into the el ey. -To this end the outer end oi the Well 4; is msde much thicker than at the ceni361 endgrsdueliy slopes backward as indicated st 44. From the center 15 it may ex-: tend straight heck as indicated at i in Fig. 2 or sic eslightly upwardly as at e in Fig. 3.
The .evice is adapted to be arranged ct e book fence so. as to be accessible from the outside thereof and to this end the'outer end 2 is errenged to fit snugly in an aperture formed therein.
16 indicstcs the fence and 13" the aperture. The door or closure l2 is errenged flush with the outer face the fence and is hingedly connected thereto st its upper edge as by the hinges 18,
it} indiceitese spring latch which en a es the lower edge ol the door 12 to hol t e seine tightly closed. This is secured to the inner face of the fence as at 20, and extends through an epertiire .21 formed below the re ceptscle end of suficient size. to permit free movement of the latch. I
The device may be rovided; with any suitehle support, and if t is level oi the alley below that of the gerd the receptacle may, rest upon the ,g "min Hethig descrihedmy invention whet I clsino. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cement garbage receptacle comprising s. snhstsntielly rectsnvuler box 0. en at one end formed of pei' llel side we s and ersliel to end bottom wells, said top wall extending; but at short distence leech from the open end leaving a filling opening, a wooden 1 In testimony whereof I have signed my strip arranged abutting the inner edge of said top Wall, tie members on said strip and cm- I bedded in said top wall, said strip being molded in place when the rece tacle Io 'med, and a metal door hinge to said strip, substantially as described. i
