JOHN ZVILKIE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY WHISTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,090, dated 0ctober14, 1902. Application filed June 11, 1902. Serial No. 111,127. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom, t 11m/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZILKIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy lVhistles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciication.
This invention relates to toy whistles in which the sound is produced by the vibration of a reed or membrane caused by blowing across the same; and the object of the inven tion is to form an improved sounding device which will produce a louder and better tone than in existing whistles.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view thereof. Fig. 2 is a cross-section. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the casing is formed of thin sheet metal, a plate of which of suitable size is folded over upon itself to form a top 6 and bottom 7. An opening 8 is formed at the bend of the plate, through which the breath is blown to sound the whistle. A reed or membrane 9, preferably formed of rubber, is stretched across between the top and bottom, adjacent the mouth-opening, the ends of the membrane being held between crimps 6, formed in the top and bottom plates, and clamped by ears 7, which project from the bottom plate and are bent down upon the top plate to bind the parts together.
The rear ends of the plates are joined to a curved or tubular sounding-piece, (indicated at 10.) This is preferably formed of celluloid, as I have found that that material is suitable to produce a loud and pleasing tone. The sounding-tube is open at eachendand also has an opening 10a between its ends. By applying` the fingersto these openings variations of tone may be produced. Other ya riations may also be produced by holding the top and bottom plates between the teeth and varying the distance between the plates by appropriate pressure.
What I claim isl. Atoy of the character described comprising a casing formed of two spaced plates, a vibratory membrane stretched across between the plates, and a curved sounding-piece of lighter material than the plates joined to the rear edges thereof.
2. Atoy of the character described comprising a casing formed of two spaced plates, a vibratory membrane stretched across between the plates, and a sounding-tube having iinger-openings at and between the ends thereof, joined to and spanning the plates at the rear edges thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ZILKIE.
