IMPROVEMENT lNSOUNDlNG-TOYS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,1 19, dated August 14, 1877 application filed June 5, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARLO ARPISELLA, of Old Point Oomfort,in the county of Elizabeth City and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the acccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved musical instrument or toy, by means of which the soundsemitted by the human vocal organs can be so modified as to resemble the sound of a trumpet or other similar musical instrument, and various highly amusing and pleasing efi'ects can be produced.

My invention consists of two concavo-convex disks or shells of any suitable material, united together with their concave sides adjoining each other by means of an elastic fastening, and provided with an aperture at some portion of their adjoining edges, to which the mouth of the operator is applied in using the instrument, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved toy, and Fig. 2 a sectional view thereof.

The letters A B represent two concavoconvex disks or shells, constructed of wood, metal, or any other suitable material, and connected together with their concave sides adjoining by means of a spring, O, which is secured at its ends to the center of each disk by means of the hooks D, formed on the ends of the pins E, inserted through the disks, or by means of any other suitable fastening devices.

The letter F represents an aperture or opening, which maybe formed at any point or portion of the edges of the adjoining disks, to which the mouth of the operator is applied for the purpose of sounding the instrument.

Instead of both disks being made concavoconvex in form, one may be made flat and the other concavo-convex, and the two united by means of the spring, with the concave side of the concavo-convex disk adjoining the flat one; and the spring by which they are united may be of any convenient description, such as a spiral metallic spring, for instance, instead of being made of india-rubber or caoutchouc, as represented in the present case.

To sound the improved instrument,or put it in operation, the operator places his mouth to the opening at the edges of the disks and sings, at the same time breathing with more or less force into the space between the two disks. This causes the two disks to separate slightly, the spring by which they are connected yielding for the purpose, and the disks will be vibrated by thesound-waves of the voice, modifying the sound of the voice, and changing it so as to resemble the tones of a trumpet or other similar musical instrument.

The operator may sing a variety of tunes through the instrument, the voice being always modified thereby, and thus a variety of highly amusing and pleasingeffects may be produced.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A toy musical instrument consisting of two disks, preferably concavo convex in form, united together by means of an elastic spring, and having an opening at their edges, to which the mouth of the operator may be applied for the purpose of sounding the instrument, substantially as set forth and shown.
