SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'733,122, dated July 7, 1903-. Application filed April 7,1903. Serial n@'. 151 .462. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHNA.BARTHOLOMEW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Musical Instrument, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved musical instrument of the whistling type arranged to permit the user to produce an exceedingly loud, far-reaching, and harmonioussoun The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure'l is a perspective View of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. l.
The instrument consists, essentially, of a flat whistle A, terminating at its front end in an integral horn B, preferably of rectangular shape in cross-section, and the said whistle A is formed of spaced parallel top and bottom members Aand A connected with each other by a closed end A so that the rounded-off sides of the whistle are open, and in the top and bottom members A and A are registering sound-holes A A The top andbottom members B and B of the flat born 13 are provided with transversely-elongated registering openings B and B for engagement by the lips of the player to prevent displacement or ejection of the instrument when using it in the usual manner.
By reference to the drawings it will be noticed that the top and bottom members 13 B of the horn B extend integrally and fiaringly at approximately like angles from the top and bottom members A A of the fiat whistle, and the side members of the horn extend likewise flaringly from the outer terminals of the open sides of the whistle, so that the hornincreases gradually both in width and height from the terminal of the Whistle outward, and hence the sounds produced by blowing the whistle are emitted in concen trated form from the horn, which thus acts as a megaphone, and hence exceedingly loud, harmonious, and far-reaching sounds are pro duced.
Having thus 7 described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 1. A musical instrument comprising a flat whistle, open at the sides and front and provided in its top and bottom members with registering sound-holes, and a horn extending integrally from the outer ends of the top and bottom members of the Whistle, as set forth.
2. A musical instrument comprising a fiat whistle having spaced top and bottom members, connected with each other at one end and provided with registering sound-holes,
and a horn, rectangular in cross-section, extending integrally from the outer ends of the top and bottom members of the whistle, as set forth.
3. A musical instrument comprising a flat whistle having spaced top and bottom members, connected with each other at one end and provided with registering sound-holes, and a horn, rectangular in cross-section, extending. integrally from the outer ends of the top and bottom members of the whistle, the horn increasing gradually in height and width from the whistle outward, as set forth.
4:. A musical instrument comprising a flat whistle, and a horn extending integrally from the outer end of the whistle and into which the whistle opens, the top and bottom members of the horn being provided with transverse elongated registering openings, forengagernent by the lips of the user, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. BARTHOLOMEW.
