HARDY H. DRAUGHON, or MINGO, NORTH CAROLINA.
BIRD-CALL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,752, dated J'une 12, 1900. Application filed January 25, 1900. Serial No. 2,775. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARDY II. DRAUGHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mingo, in the county of Sampson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bird-Calls; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bird-calls, and especially to a device adapted for use in imitating the notes of wild turkeys; and in carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a hollow box-shaped device having a cover with projecting edge and an intervening slot or aperture between one edge of the body portion of the call and the top projecting portion which forms the sounding-board, and the provision of a piece of slate or other suitable material, which is adapted to be held in one hand and drawn with its broad face against the projecting edge of the sounding-board, whereby as the piece of slate or other material is drawn across the thin edge of the soundingboard the frictional contact between the same will cause a slight vibration and the true note of the wild turkey maybe thus imitated. In
order to vary the tone of the note, the finger of the person holding the bird-call may be placed against the sounding-board at difierent locations in order to muffle the tone and give the effect of an echo or note of the bird at a distance.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of the sounding-board to produce the note of the wild turkey.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of the bird-call, which is made preferably of wood, and is recessed out on one face, and one of the longitudinal edges is recessed away, as at A, and mounted over the recessed face of the body portion is a sounding-board B, which is made of a thin piece of board and incloses the recessed portion and has a projecting longitudinal edge B extending over the longitudinal recessed portion A in the edge of the body port-ion of the bird call, thus forming a slot,as shown clearly in the drawings. D is a piece of slate or othersuitable material which is utilized in producing a vibration to the sounding-board B by drawing the broad face of said slate, which is rough on its surface, against the projecting edge of the sounding-board. In order to make the frictional contact between the slate and the projecting edge positive, resin may be placed upon the contact-surface of said slate and the projecting edge of the sounding-board, if desired. 1
In operation a person holds the body portion of the bird-call in the manner illustrated in the drawings, preferably between the call with the sounding-board the note may be varied from a deep tone to a sharp one.
It will be noted that the corners of the board portion of my call are rounded and that the slot does not extend the entire length of the side, solid portions being left at each end of the slot, whereby smothered or soft notes may be reproduced.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' I I 1. A turkey-call, comprising a hollow receptacle having a soundingboard against the edge of which a piece of slate or other material is held in moving frictional contact, causing a vibration in imitation of the note of the other material having a rough surface which wildturkey. is adapted to be moved longitudinally in fric- 2.
