SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,740, dated September 10, 1889.

Be it known'that I, LOUIS SCHEMBECK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in find-Instruments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in wind-instruments, and has for its object specially to produce a childs trumpet which shall be easily operated and produce a great volume of sound, admitting of ready modulations and novel effects.

'It consists in the combination, with the trumpet, of a reed and reed frame or cup of novel construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diametric section of the trumpet, taken longitudinally through the reed in line a: x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the trumpet in line y y of Fig. 1 immediately over the upper face of the tongue, affording a plan viewthereof; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line .2 z of Fig. 1.

The trumpet (represented by the letter A) is of the customary form, made of thin metal, flaring outwardly toward its outer end, its inner end forming the usual mouth-piece.

The reed consists of a thin fiat metallic tongue-plate 13, whose side and front edges are made to fit and rest upon the lateral and front top edges of an extended narrow cup 0, so as to completely cover the interior hollow space within the cup from its front end to a point near to its rear end, leaving an interval at the rear end uncovered, as shown at D in the drawings. The thin metallic tongue thus fitted to rest upon and cover the top of the long narrow cup O, excepting only a short space at its rear end, is confined in place upon the cup by an encircling band E, which passes around the middle of the length of the cup in manner to bind and tie the central portion of the tongue to the cup, leaving its front and rear ends free to vibrate thereon.

The packing and confining band E may be made of lead or other soft metal adapted to be cast or otherwise closely fitted over the reed-cup and tongue, or it may be made of rubber or other elastic substance, to be stretched over the cup, or of thread or other fibrous material to be wound around it. In case a packing-ring, of rubber or of fibrous material is used a central strip F, Figs. 1 and 3, made fiat 011 its inner and convex on its outer face, so as to be more or less semicircular. in cross-section, and of a width corresponding to that of the reed, is first placed upon the outer face of the latter to complete the circle of which the cup and reed form a segment, so as to facilitate the application thereto of the rubber or fiber in an annular form.

The circumference of the packing and confining band E is so proportioned as that it will fit closely within the trumpet and make a tight joint therewith when properly in serted therein, as shown in the drawings.

In the use of the instrument a blast of air forced therein at its smaller end a will cause the front end of the tongue B, resting upon the edge of the front end of the reedcup 0, to vibrate, and the air escaping under it will pass, as indicated by the arrows, longitudinally through the cup and out into the trumpet at the opening D between the rear end of the reed and the rear wall of the cup, producing peculiar sonorous vibrations, resulting in novel sounds of various tones.

I claim as my invention- 1. The reed for wind-instruments, consisting of a longitudinal cup 0, having a tongue B of shorter length resting upon its upper rim to close down upon the front and sides thereof and leave an uncovered opening D at its rear end, and an encircling band E, binding the tongue strip to the cup at or about the middle of its length, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
