FRANK GILES FAWKES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADVERTISING NOVELTY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 16, 1912.
Application filed July 25, 1910. Serial No. 573,728.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. FAWKES, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Novelties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising novelties, and consists of a musical device having advertisingmatter thereon.
The chief object of the invention is to bring the advertising matter displayed thereon to the attention of any one using the device.
Another object is to provide a toy from which a musical or other sound can be produced with the assistance of the human voice.
With these and other objects in view, which will hereafter be more fully described, I have designed the device illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line AA of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 being slightly modified, and Fig. A is a sectional view of another modified form.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the drawings and in the specification, in which 1 is a tube having one end open and the other end covered with a cap 2 of oiled paper, skin, or other material. The tube has an opening 3 near its closed end.
A modified form of the invention shows an.
arm 4 of spring steel or other suitable material having an enlarged head 5 of glass or other hard substance thereon secured by any suitable means to the tube adjacent the closed end thereof so that the head 5 will just contact with the cap 2 at about its center. The cap is secured to the tube by means of a sheet 6 having advertising matter printed thereon. The sheet is pasted to the tube and one of its ends 7 engages the overturned portion 8 of the cap holding it securely in place.
To operate the device it is only necessary to place the mouth over the opening and sing or hum into the tube, the vibration of the cap caused by the voice striking thereagainst operates to greatly enhance the sound and adds a musical innovation thereto. The head of the member 4 contacting the cap exaggerates the vibration.
In Fig. 4 the device is shown as having both ends of the tube covered by caps 9 which are like the cap 2 on the other forms of the device and are held to the tube by the sheet 10. This tube is provided with openings 11 and 12, one near each end of the tube, or if desired these openings may be placed nearer the center of the tube.
I claim as new and desire to secure .by Letters Patent,
1. A musical device consisting of a tubular member having a mouth opening in its side, a vibrating cap thereon and a covering adapted to secure said cap to said member.
2. A musical device consisting of a cylindrical tube, provided with an opening in the side thereof, a flexible cap therefor, a vibrating member secured to said tube and extending centerward thereof, a head on said vibrating member adapted to barely contact with the central portion of said cap.
3. A musical device consisting of a tubular member having a mouth opening in its side, a vibrating cap thereon, and an advertising covering adapted to secure said cap to said member.
4. A musical device consisting of a tubular member having an opening in its side, a vibrating cap on its end and an advertising coveringfor said tubular member.
5. A musical device consisting of a tubular member having a single cap, said cap adapted to vibrate, said member having an opening in the side thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK GILES FAWKES.
Witnesses:
WM. J. GALLAGHAN, A. B. CooMBs.
