UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOW'ARD LEGGE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PENCIL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\l 'o. 432,831, dated July 22, 1890. Application filed April 1, 1890- Serial No. 346,157. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern."
, Be it known that I, HOWARD LEGGE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
My invention relates to certain new improvements in pencil-boxes; and it consists of the parts and details of construction as hereinafter set forth and described.
My invention is especially applicable for use of school-children, and affords a convenient device for holding and carrying pencils to and from school, and at the same time provides means for the sharpening of slate or lead pencils.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this application, in which similar. letters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the entire specification and drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box opened, and Fig. 2 a view taken in crosssection.
The letterA is used to indicate the box proper, which is provided with the usual lid or cover B. At one end of said box I form or provide the chamber C, within which I secure or locate the pcncil-sharpenerD. Insertion of pencil into the sharpeneris made through the opening a, made in the front thereof, as shown. The dirt or clippings from the pencil fall into the chamber O, and are emptied therefrom through the escape opening 1), formed in the top b. Upon the inner face of the cover I secure the catch 0, and immediately below the same emery-block E. This is brought into use for the purpose of putting a fine point on the pencil after having been sharpened by means of the sharpener D. It will thus be seen that I form the holder and sharpener in one device, thus saving the annoyance to children of carrying two or more articles for keeping their pencils in order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. A pencil-box having its holding-recepta- -cle provided with an end chamber having a pencil-sharpener secured therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
2. A pencil-box having its holding-receptacle provided with an end chamber having a pencil-sharpener secured therein, an escapeopening formed in the top thereof, and a point-grinder secured to the inner face of the box-lid, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HOIVARD LEGGE.
In presence of- N.'A. AOKER, J. H. BLOOD.
