Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. SCOLLAY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENClL-CLASPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 208,639. dated October 1, 1878; application filed August 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALFRED SGOLLAY, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Pencil-Holders, Point-Protectors, and Sharpeners Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section.
This invention consists of a slotted tube open at both ends, the lower end being provided with a removable sharpener. To the side of the tube is secured a spring-barb for holding the tube in position when placed within the pocket, the side of the pocket, or the cloth at the edge thereof, being caught and held between the barb and the tube, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the case or tube of a size to readily receive the largest-sized pencil. The upper end is slotted 011 opposite sides, at a a, to provide the necessary spring or gripe, so that while the pencil is held from dropping out accidentally, it can also be readily drawn out of the holding-tube. The lower end of the tube is provided with a beveled slot, 1), and a plug, 0, having a beveled knife-blade or sharpener, d, fitting into this lower end, so that by pressing down the pencil into the tube and giving it a rotary motion a point is quickly made upon the pencil. A barbed spring, B, is secured to the side of the tube, and serves to hold the instrument in place within the pocket by griping the cloth of the garment between the case and its barbed spring. This mode of securing the case permits it to be readily removed without injury to the garment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pocket pencil-holder consisting of the slotted tube A a a and barbed spring B, substantially as set forth and described.
2. A pocket pencil-holder having slots to a, beveled slot b, and provided with a sharpener, c d, and barbed spring B, substantially as set forth and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of August, 1878.
XVM. A. SCOLLAY. [L. s.] Witnesses:
C. W. M. SMITH, WM. MINER.
