awucmroz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,547,
dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed April 8, 1892. Serial No. 428,299. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH W. BATTELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Pencil Sharpener and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The aim of this invention is to produce a new and improved device for holding pencils and rubbers and the like, and also a new and improved pencil-sharpener.
To this end the invention consists of the device described and claimed in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is the bottom view showing the pencilsharpener, and Fig. 4 is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings and in detail, it will be seen that my device is made out of two parts A andB and that the same maybe held together by the screws O. The part A has the rims a and CL and the part B has the rims b and b, which when the two parts are secured together form two receptacles for rubbers and the like. The part A also has the flange a and the part B the flange b which when the parts A and B are secured together will form a raised projection or boss J. The flanges a and b have holes formed therein, and five of such holes are shown in the drawings, the center hole D of which is made vertical and the side holes D of which are inclined away, so that the pencils may be placed in said holes.
On the bottom side of the parts A and B are formed ledges E and F, as indicated in Fig. 3, and into these ledges is formed the conical hole G, which constitutes the pencilsharpener. A knife H is secured on the flange E, as shown in Fig. 3, and the cuttingedge h of this knife is made circular, so that a small portion 71 will be left, that the leads of the pencils may project beyond the knife without being broken off. The knife H has formed therein slots h, which are made parallel to the axis of the hole G, and the knife may be held in place by the screws m and the washers n. Thus the knife may be adjusted by simply sliding the same along the hole G, and, further, the knife can never act to break off the leads. It is a veryconvenient and handy way to mount the sharpener in a frame of this character, as the same is always at hand and cannot be lost, and as the sharpener is entirely housed within the casing the same is protected from being broken off or disarranged.
Thus it will be seen that my entire device makes a very handsome desk ornament and one which is of great utility.
Modifications of the device herein shown and described may be made by a skilled inechanic without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The pencil-supporter consisting of the parts A and B, fastened together, the part A having the rims a, a, and a and the part B having the rims b, b, and b whereby two cups or receptacles and holes D and D will be left in the completed structure, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a pencil supporter or holder and a pencil-sharpener housed and protected therein, substantially as described.
The combination of a suitable casing and a pencil-sharpener housed therein, said sharpener having a knife, as H,the cutting-edge of which is circular, as at h, whereby a clear space, as h will be left for the leads, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a suitable casing and a pen oil-sharpener housed therein, said sharpener having aknife H, having slots 71', screws m, and washers n, holding the said knife in place, said knife having a circular cuttingedge h, whereby a space 72, will be left for the leads, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH \V. BATTELLE.
