SCHOOL COMPANION Filed May 25, 1946 BY www,
Patented May 9, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in school companions, that is to a flexible pencil carrying case, or the like having or carried thereby a pencil Sharpener, one object of the invention being the provision of a novel arrangement of pencil Sharpener and pencil case wherein the Sharpener is always ready at hand and iS bodily carried by the folded portion forming an open ended pocket of the case to frictonally receive and hold the pencil Sharpener.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 iS a plan view of a case embodying the present invention showing the pencil Sharpener in full lines as carried at one end of the exible case.
Figure 1il is an edge or side view of a modied form of school companion.
Figure 2 is a side view as taken from the left side of the case as Shown in Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view taken from the right side.
Figure 4 is a view in longitudinal section of the pencil Sharpener and its carrying member per se.
Figure 5 is a cross section thereof.
Figure 6 is a plan View of the pencil Sharpener as attached to a zipper case.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1-5, the reference numeral 8 designates a case, which is made from a strip of relatively flexible material and is provided with a pencil holding, folded, open ended, pocket 9, and a flap I0 which when in snapped position closes the pocket.
At one end the flexible material is formed in an open square as a receptacle to snugly receive a pencil Sharpener I I, rectangular in cross section which is open at one end for entrance of the pencil as is usual in the type of pencil Sharpener here employed. This Sharpener consists of a relatively long rectangular tube I2, which has secured therein the cutting and pencil receiving element I3, the shavings from which are expelled through the open metal frame Ill attached to and carried by the portion I0' of the case and at one side thereof.
AS shown in Fig. 1B, where similar parts to that of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are primed, it will be noted that the Sharpener is placed at the lower end of the school companion, and the flap I0 is shortened, the rectangular in cross section Shaped I0a is formed from the Strip 9', but the general idea is retained.
In the construction Shown in Fig. 6, a zipper pocket open at its upper edge is an open pocket I6, which is similar to the pocket or folded portion I0, hereto described to receive as there Shown a pencil Sharpener I 'I, an open metal frame I8 being attached similarly to the frame I4.
By providing an open ended pocket I0', the pencil Sharpener can be forcibly pushed in place to cause the flexibility of the pocket to frictionally conform to the Sharpener and hold it firmly in place with the pencil receiving end open at one side of the case.
In all these showings, the pencil Sharpener is readily accessible and is carried bodily by the severa-l types of cases which cases are made of a flexible material that is capable of being folded over and sewn or adhesively connected to provide a Slip-in conforming receptacle for the pencil Sharpener.
What is claimed is:
1. A school companion comprising a strip of ilexible material folded and sewn to provide a pencil receptacle, one folded edge being sewn to provide an open ended flexible pocket with a shavings outlet adjacent one end of the pocket, a pencil Sharpener frictionally filling said pocket and gripped by the material thereat to hold the Sharpener rmly in place, the shavings emitting opening of the Sharpener being aligned with the outlet of the pocket.
2. A school companion as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pencil Sharpener is rectangular in cross section and a rectangular open metal frame is attached to the exterior of the pocket adjacent to the shavngs outlet of the pocket to reinforce the pocket at that point.
