Description
UNITED STATES GEORGE COUCH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE BOLSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,498, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I GEORGE Conan, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have made a new and useful Improved Adjustable Bed-Bolster; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to form an improved bolster for household purposes, but specially adapted as a pillow for invalids, and which in use and application shall avoid the inconveniences incurred from the use of common pillows, and dispense with the necessity of stufling, propping, &c. The nature thereof relates to providing a hinged frame with toggle-links, consisting of hinged supporting-rods properly connected to a slotted sliding rod, so that, by means of a thumbscrew, said frame can be supported by said toggle-links in any required adjusted position. Also, said invention relates to the arrangement of an extension head-piece secured adjustably to the upper frame, all of which will now more fully appear.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use my said improved bolster, I will now more fully describe the same, referring to-- Figure 1 as an end view, showing two pillows adjusted in different positions; and Fig. 2 as a section of same at line as x.
The adjustable pillow has two frames, A A, properly hinged together. The frames A A are made adjustable, so as to be raised or lowered, by the supporting-bars B B B B the upper bars or rods B B being secured by hinge-joints b b to the upper frame; similarly the lower rods B B being secured by hinge-joints b b to lower frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The supporting-rods B B are further connected in a hinged manner to a slotted rod, 0, at c. The opposite rods B 13, however, are hinged to the slotted rod 0 by athumb-screw, C, in manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By means of the thumb-screw G the respective toggle-links formed to support the frames can readily be locked in adjusted position. The upper frame A will be padded, bolstered, and otherwise covered in manner ordinary. The lower frame A, however, merely rests by its covering-cloth on the mattress or bed.
In order to lengthen the pillow and form a head-rest the upper frame A is provided with an extension pillow, D. The pillow D consists of the wooden piece D, with proper cloth covering attached also to the large pillow proper. The
extension pillow is made adjustable by its slides d d, secured to slide in proper mortises of the upper frame A. (See Fig. 1.)
The extension pillow, in conjunction with the bolster proper, can be made to form a show pillow.
My improved adjustable bed-bolster can be made single or double, and in its use and application possesses advantages readily apparent; also, in construction it is simple, cheap, and durable.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim is- 1. The arrangement of an extension head-pillow, D, in combination with an adjustable pillow, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of supporting-rods B B B B, sliding red O, thumb-screw O, in combination with hinged frames A A constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE COUCH. Witnesses:
WILLIAM W. HERTHEL, ROBERT BURNS- (62)
