Description

"fw tlmtnl www taten B. LfSOU-THACK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
i Letters Patent No. 87,216, elated Fabrica/ry l23, 1869.
The Schedule referred Lo vin these Letters Patent and making part gf the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. L. SOUTHACK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented-a new and improved Sofa-Bed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe aocompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved sofa-bed, showing .it folded together.
Figure 2 is a similar view, showing it extended.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section ofthe saine, taken on the plane of the line a; x, fig. 1.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to construct a sofabed, in which the back of the sofa is used to forni part of the bed-bottom, so that, in order to convert the sofa into a bedstead, the whole article has not to be moved from the wall near which it stands.
This is a great inconvenience in the sofa-beds now in use, and to overcome it is the chief object of my4 invention. v
My invention consists, principally, in so connecting the back with the seatfportiou of the sofa, and in so constructing the said back, that when the seat is pulled out of the soia-frame, the back will be swung or brought down'into the former place of the seat, to become part of the bed-bottoni, this whole operation being carried on without disturbing th sofa-frame.
A, in the drawing, represents the frame of my improved sofa-bed.
It consists of the side-pieces aa, connected by the front and back planks b c, and forming the head and footfrests, or arm-supports d d.
It is made of'wood or other suitable material, of suitable design and form.
B is the seat of the sofa.
The saine consists of slats or boards c e, which are secured at the ends to boards or planks fj, that fit againstvthe arm supports d d, as shown.
To the front edges of the planks f are secured upright posts g g, which extend to the door in front of the frame A, and which may be connected by means of a board, h, in front of b, as is clearly shown in gs. 1 and 2.
The seat can be locked to the frame by means of. a hook, i, shown in iig. 1, or by a bolt, Aor other means.
The posts g should be provided with casters, so that the seat-frame can be easily pulled out from the main frame, as in fig. 2.
The hack, C, of the sofa is made of slats, which are hinged together, or connected-by flexible bands jj, so that the baclLwill thus become flexible. It is hinged to the seat, so as to be vdrawn out with the saine.
lVhen the 'instrument is contracted into a sofa, as
in lig. 1, the back, G, will, with its ends, lit into grooves that are formed in posts h 7c, projecting in rear from the frame A..
Thev upper ends of said postsinay be connected by means of a horizontal or other bar, Z, as shown.
The lower ends of the grooves in k are rounded, as shown, so that when the lseat is drawn out, as in fig. 2, the back may readily follow, to occupy the former place of the seat.
Both the back and the seat may be upholstered in any suitable manner.
It will be noticed that the sofa can b e readily converted into a bedstead without disturbing the nain frame A.
The seat can be so arranged that it may be swung open when on the sofa, to allow the bedding under it to be taken out orput intothe lounge.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Patent- 1. A sofa-bed, so arranged that the back will, when the seat is drawn out, follow the same, and form part of the bed-bottom, as set forth.
2. The slat-back G of a sofa-bed, arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
Letters 3. The combination, in a sofa-bed, of tbe stationary v frame A, sliding seat-flame B, and rolling back C, all made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
