T Dnnro THOMAS C. POTTER, OF WILLISTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COM BiNED FOLDING COTS AND CHAIR S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,423, dated J one 25, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. POTTER, of Williston, in the county of Ohittenden and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined Folding Get and Chair; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to theletters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined portable folding cot and chair, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my device arranged as a chair. Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing it arranged as a cot. Fig. 3 is a side view, showing it folded ready for transit; and Fig. 4 is a section, showing the arrangement of the legs under the foot end of the cot.
A represents a frame, of about half thelen gth of the cot desired, forming the head part of the cot, the outer end of the same being slightly raised,as shown. To the opposite end of the frameA is hinged a smaller frame, B, andto the outer end of this frame is hinged still another frame, 0, completing the length of the cot desired. These frames may be provided with slats, cane, carpet, upholstery, or anything suitable to form "the bottom. The adjoining end rails of the two frames A and B are made, respectively, concave and convex on their edges, as a finish when my device is used as a chair; but they may, of course, be made straight, or in any other desired manner. At a suitable point under the frame A are hinged cross-legs D D, as shown, to support the main part of the cot. Between these legs is arranged a bag, E, to contain smaller articles of bedding, &c. On the inside of the side pieces of the frame B, at the outer or rear end, are pivoted legs G, which are connected by suitable rounds, and braced, when thrown down, by hooks a, as shown in Fig. 4, said hooks being pivoted in recesses on the side pieces of said frame. These legs G Gr then support the foot end of the cot.
When using this as a chair the frame 0 forms the seat, supported by the cross-legs D D, and the frame B forms the back, while the frame A extends down behind the back B and forms, so to say, an additional leg or support for the chair.
In either position the various parts are connected by hooks b b, as shown, or by bolts of any kind, or by any other suitable fastenings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described combined folding cot and chair, consisting of the frames A, B, and O, cross-legs D D with bag E and the legs G G, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of May, 1872. I
T. O. POTTER. Witnesses:
JACOB MARSH, A. J. HOWARD.
