To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MICHAEL Mns'rnn, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Chair- Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and iisgful improvements in combination chair- The primary object of the invention is the provision of a convertible chair whereby the same'may form of a bed when found desirable, the entire structure being compactly foldable when not in use.

A further object of the device is the provision of a foldable piece of furniture adapted for assuming the form of a chair having a. resiliently mounted head-rest, the structure being capable of positioning as a bed and in which position the head-rest assumes the" arrangement of a fixed bolster.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a foldable chair and bed structure that possesses great strength and is comfortable and serviceable while in use,

" the same being also easy and inexpensive to manufacture.

Referring more in detail to the drawings a base or support 10 is arranged adapted as a central support for the device when the same is employed as a bed and as a rear support therefor when arranged in its chair formation, the same having opposite legs 11 connected together by bars 12. frame 13 being hereafter termed the back section and the frame 1 1 the bottom section. The bottom section 14 isarranged with a foldabl strut 16 hinged thereto as at 17 and foldable within the lower side of the bottom section 1% when not in use as illustrated by dotted lines in'Fig. 3 of the drawings and at which times the turn buttons 18 may be positioned thereover for retaining the strut 16 in its foldable arrangement. Opposite stops 19 are carried by the frame 14L for limiting out-ward swinging movement ofthe strut 16'when the strut is unfolded in its operative arrangement and with the base 10 forms the support for the bottom section 14 when positioned upon the floor or other foundationsuch as 20.

Theback section 13 is provided with a head-rest 21 hinged thereto as at 22 and foldable within cutaway portions 23 of the opposite sides 2d of the back section, springs 25 being preferably arranged between the sides 2% and head rest 21'. A'woven or mesh wire netting 26is provided for both of the sections 13 and 14 after the manner of a bed bottom the net-tings of the two sections being connected together by rings 27. It will be noted that the netting 26 of the back section 13 is secured to the sides 24 and to the head rest 21, whereby-the netting is stretched upon depresslng or folding the head rest 12 against the sides 24: Within the cutaway portions the netting 26 renders the normal position less of thesprings 25.

The bottom section '1 together with thebase 10 and forward or foot strut 16 are arranged in the positions shown in'Fig. 1 of the drawings whenever the device is in its operative positions either arranged as a chair or a bed. When arranged as a chair, the hook retainers 28 which are pivoted to the sides 24 as at 29 are arranged with their terminal hooks 30'engaged within loops 31 substantially' centrally arranged at opposite sides of the bottom section let and it will be seen that the structure in this arrangement is similar to the well known Morris chair formation with the back section 13 suitably inclined rearwardly while the head-rest 21 is suitably tilted, resiliently mounted as heretofore noted. Y

- The rear strut 32 similar to the forward strut 16 is pivoted as at 33 between the sides 23. This arrangement of clined and resting upon the floor 20 as shown same en a 'es o3 osite sto s 19 in Fig. 2 of the drawings. WVhen the strut 32 is pivotally arranged in this manner the carried by the sides 24 while upward extensions 34 of the strut 32 are arranged beneath the head-rest 21 providing a solid foundation for the head-rest when the device is used as a bed. The hooks 28 at such times are engaged with eyes 35.upon the bottom section 14 whereby the, bed structure is rendered stable and secure. mattress member or cushions not shown are to be arranged upon the netting 26.

The complete operation of the device Will be apparent from this detailed description thereof the device being easily shiftable from its bed to its chair formation and vice versa. When it is desired to fold the device, the struts 16 and 32 are positioned within the frames 14 and 13 respectively and the buttons 18 and 34 respectively secured thereover. The hooks 28 are then released and the frames 13 and 14 move toward each other upon their hinges 15 until the frames are in contact with the head-rest 21 closed therebetween and in which position oppositefhooks 36 which are carried by the back section 13 may be engaged with eyes 37 carried by the bottom section 14. The hooks 28 will then be engaged with eyes 38 carried by the base 10 and the entire structure will assume its compact folded arrangement. It will be noted that the legs 11 are provided with inner shoulders 39 adj acent the hinges 15 and upon which the sections 13 and 14 are seated when the device is folded and at which times the hinged end portions of the frames 13 and 14 are arranged between the upper portions 40 of the legs 11 of the base 10.

A serviceable combination chair-bed is arranged that possesses great strength when set up for use and only consumes a small amount of space when in its folded arrangement and while the present embodiment of the device is believed to be preferable it will be evident that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

whereby the adjacent ends of said sections are seated upon the sa1d shoulders with the sections in fiat engagement wlth each other when the device is folded, a swinging H strut carried adjacent the free end of the bottom section, a strut swingingly connected to the back section adjacent the free end thereof and arranged with extensions positioned above the said back section when the said strut is in its operative pos1t1on,a

head-rest resiliently attached to the back section and positioned upon the said extensions when the device is arranged in its bed formation.

4. A combination article of furniture comprising a mount, bottom and back frame sections hinged to the said mount, a headrest hinged to the back section, metal netting overlying the said head-rest and back, a netting arranged over the said bottom sec tion, and connections between the said netting.

A combination article of furniture comprising a base, a bottom section hinged at one side thereof, a back section hinged to the said base, a head-rest hinged to the said back, a metal netting secured to the said head-rest and back whereby the headrest is normally resiliently maintained at an angle to the back, a supporting strut hinged to the back having extensions adapted for arrangement beneath rest within the folding path of the movement of the latter when the strut and back are in their operative positions with the device arranged in its bed formation.
