BED-DRAWER ATTACHMENT FOR BEDSTEADS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 60,022, dated September 22, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONIA MABEE, of Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Drawer Attachments for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in the class of bedsteads having a bed-drawer arranged to slide beneath the usual mattresssupport.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter de scribed, and more specifically indicated in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 1s a longitudinal section of a bedstead and the bed-drawer, the latter being extended 1n the position required for use. Fig. 1 1s a perspective view of a detachable panel-p ece. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2 2 ofFig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the bed-drawer pushed in. Referring, in the first instance, to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the bedstead A is shown provided with an ordinary mattress-support a, beneath which are arranged longitudinal parallel rails I), (see Fig. 2,) upon which the bed-drawer B is mainly supported and slides. The latter is a rectangular oblong frame having a bottoni composed of woven wire and provided at its outer end with hinged supporting-legs. (Z and a folding head piece 6. This beddrawer B is made sufliciently smaller than the bedstead A to adapt it to be contained in the latter; yet it is large enough to accommodate two adults comfortably. It slides through an opening in the foot-piece of .the bedstead, but might obvlously be arranged to slide through an opening of one of the side rails without requiring the exercise of invention to make such slight changes in construction as would be required for the purpose. The head-piece e of the bed-drawer B stands vertical when the latter is drawn out, as shown in Fig. 1, and folds upon the side rails when the same is pushed in, as shown In Fig. 3. Pieces 6, hinged to the side ra1ls, serve to support the head-piece vertically, Fig. 1, and are adapted to fold inward beneath the headpiece, as shown in Fig. The legs d are hinged to the inner side of a cross-bar f in such manner that when pendent, as in Fig. 1, they abut its lower edge, and are thus held in the proper position to support the beddrawer. 1V hen the latter is pushed in, Fig. 3, the legs lie parallel with the under side of the bed-drawer. hen the bed-drawer B is extended, its inner end rests on the bottom end rail g of the bedstead A, Fig. 1, and a stop-button h prevents it being drawn out too far. The outer end 'i or head proper of the bed-drawer B is made in the form of a panel and conforms in appearance to the integral portion of the foot-piece of the bedstead A, so that when the bed drawer is pushed in, Fig. 3, such paneled head appears to the eye to be an integral part of the foot-piece.

I11 Figs. 4E and 5 I show a modification in which two bed-drawers B. B are employed instead of the one B, before described, and each is adapted to slide through an opening in a side rail of the bedstead A, and one is shown drawn out and-the other pushed in. Each is of a size which adapts it to accommodate one adult; but otherwise it is in all essential particulars constructed like the larger end drawer B. The side drawers B slide on cross-bars I), as shown in Fig. 4. When either end drawer B or the side drawers B are not used, a panel-piece D, Fig. 1, is inserted to fill the opening in the foot-piece or side rail of the bedstead A, and in order to hold it in place itis provided with a fixed stud 6 and pivoted button j, as shown. v

It will be seen. that by my improved attachment I double the capacity of the ordinary bedstead by providing accommodation for four persons instead of two. In other words, I provide two full-sized beds, which, however, when not extended for use, occupy no more space than one.

What I claim is The combination, with the bedstead hav ing an opening in its side, of the bed-drawer sliding in said opening, and the head-piece c and legs (Z, hinged to the bed-drawer and adapted to fold parallel against the side rails of the bed-drawer, as shown and described.
