The present invention relates to a carbon nanotube emitter, a method for manufacturing the same, and a field emission device using the same, and a method for manufacturing the same.
Since the unique structural and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes are known, many studies have been conducted to apply them to fields such as field emission devices (FEDs) and transistor secondary batteries. In particular, carbon nanotubes as emitters of field emission devices have many advantages such as low driving voltage, high brightness, and cost competitiveness. Methods for producing such carbon nanotube emitters include screen printing using carbon nanotube powder and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Among them, the carbon nanotube growth method using chemical vapor deposition method is capable of manufacturing a high-resolution display device and grows carbon nanotubes directly on a substrate, so the process has a simple advantage, and active research using this is in progress. Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) and Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (Thermal CVD) are typical examples of such chemical vapor deposition.
In order to produce better field emission devices, carbon nanotubes used as emitters should have lower driving voltage and higher electron emission current and show uniform electron emission characteristics in a large area. In order to have a low driving voltage and a high electron emission current, carbon nanotubes must have a suitable density with a thinner diameter. Since the diameter of the carbon nanotubes is determined by the size of the catalytic metal present on the tube, in order to synthesize the carbon nanotubes having a smaller diameter, the catalyst particles having a smaller size must be formed and controlled. In addition, in order to control the density of the carbon nanotubes, the unidirectionality of the grown carbon nanotubes is essential, and in order to obtain uniform electron emission characteristics in a large area, a uniform temperature distribution of the growth system is necessary.
Disclosure of Invention An object of the present invention is to provide a carbon nanotube emitter having a low driving voltage and a high electron emission current and showing uniform electron emission characteristics, a method of manufacturing the same, a field emission device using the same, and a method of manufacturing the same.

Hereinafter, exemplary embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings, the size of each component may be exaggerated for clarity. First, the growth of carbon nanotubes by plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) will be described.
1 >><< Experimental Example 1 >>
1A and 1B are SEM images showing carbon nanotubes grown on a substrate by plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD).
FIG. 1A shows carbon nanotubes grown for 30 minutes on an unpatterned catalyst metal layer on a glass substrate. The carbon nanotubes shown in FIG. 1A were grown in a direction perpendicular to the substrate, about 5 μm in length, and about 50 to 80 nm in diameter. FIG. 1B shows a carbon nanotube grown using a plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) for 20 minutes after patterning a catalyst metal layer using a photolithography process into a disk with a diameter of 10 μm. Referring to FIG. 1B, it can be seen that carbon nanotubes were selectively grown only on a circular catalyst metal layer pattern. The grown carbon nanotubes had a length of about 3 ㎛ and a diameter distribution of about 50 ~ 80 nm.
As described above, the carbon nanotube growth method using plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) can grow the carbon nanotubes in a direction perpendicular to the substrate and has the advantage of being able to synthesize at a relatively lower temperature than other growth methods. Vertical growth of carbon nanotubes depends on the direction of the electric field applied between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode in the plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system, and thus the growth direction of the carbon nanotubes can be controlled according to the direction of the electric field. In addition, since the growth direction of carbon nanotubes is constant, it is easy to control the density and has the advantage of easy electron emission by electric field. However, the growth of uniform carbon nanotubes is difficult, and carbon nanotubes grown at low temperatures have a disadvantage that their field emission characteristics are not good because of their relatively large diameters.
2 >><< Experimental Example 2 >>
2A and 2B are SEM images showing carbon nanotubes grown on a substrate by thermal chemical vapor deposition (Thermal CVD).
The carbon nanotubes grown on the planar substrate (FIG. 2A) and the patterned substrate (FIG. 2B) were grown in a random direction, and show that the carbon nanotubes are entangled with each other. The growth of the grown carbon nanotubes is about 40-50 nm thinner than that grown by plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and the growth length is about 4 μm.
The thermal chemical vapor deposition method (Thermal CVD) is a good temperature uniformity of the carbon nanotubes because the temperature of the entire specimen is constant, and can grow carbon nanotubes having a small diameter compared to the plasma chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) electrons It is advantageous in that carbon nanotubes having a low turn on voltage can be formed. However, unlike thermal chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), thermal CVD does not take an electric field on the substrate during carbon nanotube growth, so the growth direction of carbon nanotubes is not constant, and gas decomposition is performed by thermal energy. There is a disadvantage that the growth temperature is higher than other growth methods.
