Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a carbon nanotube manufacturing method and a carbon nanotube manufacturing apparatus.
In recent years, carbon nanotubes (hereinafter also referred to as “CNT”) that have been attracting attention as carbon materials include arc discharge methods, laser evaporation methods, chemical vapor deposition methods (CVD methods), and the like. Suitable for mass production. Production of CNTs by the CVD method is performed, for example, by the following method. First, a substrate carrying a catalyst such as iron (Fe) or nickel (Ni) is loaded into a reaction furnace, and the reaction furnace is heated from 500 ° C. to 1300 ° C. Next, a hydrocarbon gas such as acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) is supplied to the reactor as a raw material gas. The source gas is generally supplied together with a carrier gas such as hydrogen. CNT grows when this source gas contacts the catalyst.
In the CNT manufacturing method, excessive carbon may be deposited on the substrate as amorphous carbon when the hydrocarbon decomposition rate is faster than the CNT growth rate. In particular, amorphous carbon is likely to be deposited on the catalyst present on the substrate, and as a result, the catalyst is covered with amorphous carbon and does not function as a catalyst. This stops CNT growth at an early stage. For this reason, for example, there is a disadvantage that it is difficult to obtain a CNT array formed of a large number of aligned carbon nanotubes having a length exceeding 2 mm.
As a method of solving this inconvenience, there is a method of suppressing the deposition amount of amorphous carbon by controlling the decomposition rate of hydrocarbons by increasing the concentration of carrier gas such as hydrogen. In this case, since the concentration of hydrocarbons decreases, the growth rate of CNT itself also decreases. Further, there is an inconvenience that the source gas discharged to the outside of the reaction furnace without contributing to the growth of CNTs is increased and the source gas is consumed wastefully.
On the other hand, in order to keep the growth rate of CNTs high, a method has been proposed in which deposited amorphous carbon is removed by etching using chlorides such as chlorine and hydrochloric acid (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2007-254271). In this method, when a certain amount of CNT is grown, chloride is supplied into the reactor, the deposited amorphous carbon is removed by etching, and CNT growth is continued again, thereby increasing the CNT growth rate. Can keep. However, in this conventional method, the process of interrupting the growth of CNT once and repeating the etching process is repeated, and accordingly, it takes time to obtain a long CNT array. Also, the CNT itself may be etched and damaged simultaneously with the etching of the amorphous carbon.
The present invention has been made based on the above circumstances, and an object of the present invention is to provide a CNT manufacturing method and a manufacturing apparatus that can easily and reliably obtain a long CNT array without damage.
The invention made in order to solve the above-mentioned problems is to supply a source gas containing a carbon source onto one or a plurality of substrates carrying a catalyst on the surface and grow carbon nanotubes on the substrate by chemical vapor deposition. A method for producing carbon nanotubes, comprising a supply step of supplying carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene onto the substrate.
The carbon nanotube manufacturing method includes a step of supplying carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene onto a substrate. The supplied carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene is thermally decomposed in a reaction furnace to generate carbon and chlorine. The generated chlorine mainly reduces amorphous carbon. “Reducing amorphous carbon” means lowering the growth rate of amorphous carbon and removing amorphous carbon, but the effect of lowering the growth rate of amorphous carbon by chlorine is considered to be dominant. The produced carbon is supplied to the catalyst and contributes to the growth of CNT. For this reason, the carbon nanotube manufacturing method can continuously grow CNTs while keeping the growth rate of CNTs high, and a long CNT array can be obtained easily and reliably.
The supply of carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene in the supply step may be performed together with the supply of the raw material gas. By supplying the carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene together with the supply of the raw material gas, the gas concentration in the reactor is maintained in a steady state, so that the above-mentioned amorphous carbon is reduced and CNT is grown at a constant growth rate. Can do. In addition, since the growth rate is constant, CNTs having a desired length can be easily obtained only by controlling the growth time.
The supply rate of the carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene to the carbon source of the source gas is preferably 5% by volume or more and 10% by volume or less. By setting the supply rate of carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene within the above range, amorphous carbon can be effectively reduced, and as a result, the growth rate of CNTs can be kept high.
Another invention made in order to solve the above-mentioned problems is to supply a source gas containing a carbon source onto one or a plurality of substrates carrying a catalyst on the surface, and to form carbon nanotubes on the substrate by chemical vapor deposition. An apparatus for producing carbon nanotubes to be grown, wherein the reaction furnace is loaded with the one or more substrates and grows carbon nanotubes by the chemical vapor deposition method, and the raw material gas supply means for supplying the raw material gas to the reaction furnace And a compound supply means for supplying carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene to the reactor.
The carbon nanotube production apparatus includes means for supplying carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene into the reaction furnace. For this reason, the carbon nanotube production apparatus supplies carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene during the growth of CNTs, and thermally decomposes the carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene in a reaction furnace. Amorphous carbon can be reduced by the chlorine thus generated. The generated carbon is supplied to the catalyst and contributes to the growth of CNT. Therefore, the carbon nanotube manufacturing apparatus can maintain a high CNT growth rate, and can easily and reliably obtain a long CNT array.
As described above, the CNT manufacturing method and the CNT manufacturing apparatus according to the present invention can continuously grow CNTs while maintaining a high CNT growth rate. Can be obtained.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings as appropriate.

(substrate)
The substrate X has a flat plate shape and carries a catalyst on its surface. By contacting the raw material gas with this catalyst, CNTs oriented perpendicular to the surface of the substrate X grow.
The material of the substrate X is not particularly limited. For example, quartz glass, silicon with an oxide film, or the like can be used. The shape of the substrate X is not particularly limited. For example, a circular shape can be used. The size of the substrate X is not particularly limited. When a circular substrate is used, the substrate X may have a diameter of 3 inches to 5 inches, for example.
Examples of the catalyst include iron, nickel, cobalt, titanium, platinum and the like. The catalyst can be supported on the substrate X by vapor deposition, sputtering, dipping or the like. The catalyst may be formed in layers on the substrate X. For example, a reaction preventing layer for preventing a reaction with the catalyst can be provided on the substrate, and a catalyst layer and a dispersion layer for dispersing the catalyst contained in the catalyst layer can be formed on the reaction preventing layer. The catalyst may be supported on one side of the substrate X, or the same type or different catalysts may be supported on both sides.

The
The
The

(Raw gas supply means)
The source gas supply unit 3 supplies source gas necessary for the growth of CNTs to the
The source gas supply means 3 mixes and supplies a carrier gas such as nitrogen (N 2 ) and hydrogen (H 2 ) in order to control the reaction rate in addition to the source gas serving as the carbon source. The decomposition rate of the source gas can be controlled by adjusting the supply amount of the carrier gas. Further, it is possible to supply only the raw material gas without mixing the carrier gas. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the flow rate of the source gas, the CNT growth time, and the like so that carbon generated by decomposition of the source gas becomes excessive and amorphous carbon that inhibits CNT growth does not accumulate on the substrate X.
The supply amount of the source gas depends on the size of the
The upper limit of the total supply amount including the source gas and the carrier gas is preferably 10,000 sccm, more preferably 5000 sccm, and still more preferably 3000 sccm. On the other hand, the lower limit of the total supply amount is preferably 2000 sccm, more preferably 2250 sccm, and further preferably 2500 sccm. When the total supply amount exceeds the upper limit, the raw material gas is less likely to stay in the
Moreover, as a minimum of the carrier gas supply amount with respect to raw material gas supply amount, 500 volume% is preferable and 700 volume% is more preferable. When the carrier gas supply amount is less than the lower limit, the decomposition rate of the source gas becomes too fast, and there is a possibility that homogeneous CNTs cannot be obtained between the upstream substrate and the downstream substrate of the source gas supply. On the other hand, the upper limit of the carrier gas supply amount is preferably 1000% by volume, and more preferably 900% by volume. When the supply amount of the carrier gas exceeds the upper limit, the decomposition rate of the raw material gas becomes too slow, and the growth rate of CNT may be insufficient.

(Compound supply means)
The compound supply unit 4 supplies carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) or trichlorethylene (C 2 HCl 3 ), which is a compound that reduces amorphous carbon, to the
Carbon tetrachloride and trichlorethylene are liquid at room temperature. In such a case, the compound supply means 4 has a means (not shown) for heating carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene, so that the vapor pressure can be increased and supplied as a gas. Further, bubbling may be performed at normal temperature with respect to carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene. As the gas for bubbling, the same gas as the carrier gas used in the source gas supply means 3 may be used. Thus, by using the same gas as the carrier gas, a part of the carrier gas can be used for bubbling. For this reason, it is easy to control the supply amount of the carrier gas, and it is easy to control the reaction rate.
The lower limit of the supply rate of carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene is preferably 5% by volume, more preferably 7% by volume with respect to the carbon source of the raw material gas. When the supply rate of carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene is less than the lower limit, the removal of amorphous carbon is insufficient and there is a possibility that a long CNT array cannot be obtained. On the other hand, the upper limit of the supply rate of carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene is preferably 10% by volume, more preferably 8% by volume with respect to the carbon source of the raw material gas. When the supply rate of carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene exceeds the above upper limit, the amount of chlorine becomes excessive, and the CNT itself may be damaged.

When a plurality of substrates X are provided, the substrates X are held at substantially equal intervals. The upper limit of the average distance d between the substrates X is preferably 3 cm, more preferably 2 cm, and even more preferably 1.7 cm. On the other hand, the lower limit of the average distance d is preferably 0.5 cm, more preferably 1 cm, and further preferably 1.3 cm. If the average distance d is less than the lower limit, the source gas may not be sufficiently supplied to the entire substrate X. Conversely, when the average distance d exceeds the upper limit, the number of substrates X that can be disposed in the

Next, regarding the CNT manufacturing method using the CNT manufacturing apparatus, a case where acetylene gas is used as a raw material gas and carbon tetrachloride is used as a compound for reducing amorphous carbon will be described. The same applies to the case where other hydrocarbon gas such as methane is used as the raw material gas and trichlorethylene is used as the compound that reduces amorphous carbon.

In the compound supply step (S4), carbon tetrachloride is supplied to the
The action of carbon tetrachloride supplied into the
(advantage)
In the CNT manufacturing apparatus and the CNT manufacturing method, carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene is supplied onto the substrate, so that the supplied compound is thermally decomposed in the
In addition, the CNT manufacturing method performs the raw material gas supply step (S3) and the compound supply step (S4) together, so that the gas concentration in the
<Other embodiments>
The present invention is not limited to the above embodiment. For example, in the above-described embodiment, a method of performing the raw material gas supply step (S3) and the compound supply step (S4) together after the start of the process is shown as a method for producing CNTs. However, a certain time has elapsed from the raw material gas supply step (S3). The compound supply step (S4) may be started later and performed together with the source gas supply step (S3).
In the above embodiment, the source
As described above, the CNT manufacturing method and the CNT manufacturing apparatus of the present invention reduce amorphous carbon, which is an inhibiting factor of CNT growth. This makes it possible to continuously grow CNTs while maintaining a high CNT growth rate, and a long CNT array can be obtained in a short time. For this reason, it can use suitably for the application field which requires long CNT arrays, such as a strain sensor.
