Abstract
The dehydrogenation of butenes, isopentenes or ethylbenzene is effected by heating to 200-900 DEG C. in the presence of sulphur dioxide and ammonia. A catalyst such as SnO2, Fe2O3, V2O5, MoS3, K2MoS4 or WS3 may be present supported if desired on pumice, charcoal, silica or brick. The partial pressure of hydrocarbon is preferably 0.1-1 atmosphere and is reduced by the use of air or steam. Ammonia is added in an amount of 1-2.5 mols. per mol. of sulphur dioxide which is present in a mol. ratio to hydrocarbon of 0.1-2; oxygen as air is used in amounts up to twice the stoichiometric amount for dehydrogenation. The ammonia and sulphur dioxide are preferably added in the form of ammonium sulphite, sulphate, bi-sulphite or bi-sulphate. Reaction times of 1-3 seconds are used, and ammonia and sulphur compounds are recovered and re-used. Specification 984,901 is referred to.
