Abstract

Petroleum hydrocarbons are autofined using a fluidized bed of a catalyst consisting essentially of the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum incorporated with a support consisting essentially of activated alumina, and containing 0.1-6 per cent of combined fluorine; catalyst is regenerated, for example by burning in air at 1050 DEG F., fluorine lost by this treatment being made up by addition of butyl fluoride to the headstock, and returned to the reaction zone. The catalyst may be regenerated continuously, or a part of the catalyst may be regenerated periodically. The autofining temperature may be 700 DEG to 800 DEG F. and the pressure may be allowed to reach equilibrium. The fluorine may be added to the catalyst in the form of tertiary butyl fluoride or aluminium fluoride.
