Abstract

Pyridine is obtained by interacting ammonia with tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising platinum. The catalyst may be used in finely divided form on a carrier or support and the reaction may be effected at 200-500 DEG C. The ammonia may be employed in an amount of 1 to 2 moles per mole of starting material, the reaction mixture may contain molecular oxygen, suitably in an amount of 0.1 to 1 mole per mole of starting material, and other diluent gases or vapours, e.g. steam, may be present.
