Abstract

A water emulsifiable polyethylene wax is obtained by reacting (e.g. at 100 DEG to 160 DEG C.) a thermally degraded non-emulsifiable polyethylene wax of M.W. from 250 to 650 with an oxygen-containing gas (e.g. air) until the acid number is from 4 to 30. An organic peroxide catalyst and/or a stabilizer (sodium or potassium carbonate or hydroxide) may be present during the reaction. The products find application as textile softeners, floor polishes, paper coatings and leather finishes.
