Abstract
Alkyl pyridines are produced by reacting together in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature a mixture of an a -b olefinically unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde containing five or more carbon atoms with ammonia and a saturated aliphatic aldehyde or saturated ketone having at least one a -methylene group. Preferred reaction conditions are a temperature of 300 DEG to 550 DEG C., a space velocity of 250 to 2,500 reciprocal hours, a molar ratio of ammonia to total carbonyl compounds of 0.5:1 to 2.5:1 and a molar ratio of unsaturated to saturated carbonyl compounds of 0.3:1 to 3:1. Conveniently a catalyst may be employed; said catalyst being silica, alumina or a mixture thereof which may be admixed with titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and may contain small proportions of metals or metal compounds.
