Abstract

975,550. Hydraulic presses. PACIFIC INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING CO. May 3, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 17526/63. Heading B5F. In an hydraulic press comprising a ram 7 operated by two or more series-connected cylinder drive assemblies 9, 11, means are provided for limiting the maximum permissible force on each of the pistons 17, 25 of the assemblies 9, 11. The invention is described as applied to a press brake having dies (not shown) mounted on a bed 5 and the ram 7. A pump 31 supplies fluid through a reversing valve 41 and line 47 to the assembly 9. The lower side of the assembly 9 is connected by a line 49 to the assembly 11 which is itself connected to the valve 41 by a line 53. The underside of the piston 17 and the upper side of the piston 25 are equal in area. The means for limiting the maximum permissible loading comprise, for the piston 25 a relief valve 74, and, for the piston 17 a relief valve 87. The relief valve 87 comprises a valve 95 which opens when the upward fluid pressure on a piston 99 overcomes the downward pressure of a spring 107 and fluid supplied through a bore 131 under control of a pilot valve 121. Ram levelling means.-This comprises a cable 171 passing over sheaves 175, 177 and connected at one end to a fixed bracket 179 and at the other end to a valve 161. Tilting of the ram 7 will connect the cylinder assembly 11 either to the pump 31 through ports 155, 157 to increase the pressure on the piston 25, or to the supply tank 35 through ports 155, 159 to decrease this pressure. Adjustment is effected by a screw 199. Failure of cable 171 would allow a spring 167 to cause the valve 161 to operate an emergency switch 201. Controlling stroke of ram.-This is effected by means of an adjustable stop 241 adapted to engage an arm 239 and move a valve 231 downwardly against spring action. Hydraulic pressure supplementing the spring 107 against the valve 95 will thus be relieved to the tank 35, and valve 95 will be raised by pump pressure on piston 99. The pump will thus be connected through valve 87 to the tank 35 and the ram 7 brought to a halt within 0.001 inch. Specification 762,420 is referred to.
