Abstract

751,004. Hydraulic presses. VICKERSARMSTRONGS (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Feb. 8, 1954 [Feb. 11, 1953], No. 3867/53. Class 69 (2). In a press in which the slide 4 is moved towards the bed 1 by two jacks 5, 8, the jack 5 being connected to a supply 45 of pressure liquid and the jack 8 being operated by the liquid displaced from. the underside of the piston of the jack 5, if one end of the slide engages the work before the other end a compensating piston 63 carried by the ram of the jack 5 is operated by the difference in pressure in the jacks and equalizes the load between the two jacks. A pipe 67 connects the jacks. The slide is raised by pull-back jacks 6, 7. A pump 23 driven by an electric motor 25 delivers liquid to a port 29 of a four-way valve 30 having a plunger 33. Solenoid-operated valves 54, 56 admit liquid to the ends of the valve body to-move the plunger. This liquid is supplied from a pilot system 55 delivering low-pressure liquid by means of a secondary pump 57. A check and holding valve 44 prevents the exhausting of liquid from the pull-back jacks 6, 7 when the pressure in the jack 5 is low, and also ensures that liquid flows from jacks 6, 7 at a controlled rate when liquid is pumped to the main jacks. When the pressure in the jack 5 rises to overcome the load, the valve 44 ensures that back pressure is relieved from the jacks 6, 7. The upper part of the jack 5 is connected by a pipe to a discharge valve 68 and through a pipe 69 to a tank. When the pull-back jack 7 is near the top of its stroke, it operates a slow-down valve 70 and a top limit switch 77 which de-energizes the valve 54 and the plunger 33 returns to its central position. A replenishing valve 73 opened by the jack 7 permits charging or venting of the pipe 67 via the pilot system 55. Limit switches actuated by the slide, or pressure switches 78 may control the energizing of the solenoids of valves 54, 56. In a modification, the pull-back jacks are omitted and the jack 8 is of conventional piston and cylinder form, the underside of the piston being connected to the underside of the piston of the jack 5 so that liquid supplied beneath the pistons will raise the slide.
