Abstract
1,102,274. Jacks. RICHARD COSTAIN Ltd. 4 May, 1965 [8 May, 1964], No. 18835/65. Heading B8J. An hydraulic jack 1 comprises a nut 9, mounted on a screw-thread provided on a piston-rod 4, turned by an auxiliary mechanism which controls the jack stroke. The auxiliary mechanism consists of ratchet teeth 10 on the nut 9 co-operating with a pawl 11 actuated by a single-acting hydraulic cylinder 12 with a piston 13. Liquid under pressure from a source 6 is supplied simultaneously through pipes 7, 8 and a non-return valve 21 to a space 5 in the cylinder 2 and through a pipe 15 to a space 14 in the cylinder 13 by means of a control valve 16. The control valve 16 is actuated by electrical switches 17, 18 which co-operate with the pawl 11. After each partial rotation of the nut 9 corresponding to a selected predetermined jack stroke the switch 17, actuated by the pawl 11, effects a change-over of the control valve 16 to release the pressure in the pipes 7, 8, 15. A spring 19 returns the piston 13 when the pawl 11 actuates the switch 18 to change back the control valve 16 for a further stroke. The nut 9, which constantly bears on the cylinder 2 acts as a locking nut in case of pressure failure. A switch 20 actuated by the teeth 10 may be provided instead of or additional to the switch 17. The jack 1 has a relief system and a worm-wheel (not shown) may be provided on the periphery of the nut 9 to enable the jack 1 to be lowered. A system comprising several jacks with switches 18 connected in series so that all the jacks, which may be hydraulically independent and subject to different loads operate at the same average lifting speed. A system may comprise several jacks connected to a common hydraulic supply under a control valve actuated by a switch on one of the jacks, provided the jacks are equally loaded.
