Abstract
958,489. Rotary engines. J. W. MARSHALL. May 23, 1960 [Feb. 23, 1959], No. 6096/59. Heading F1F. In a rotary compressor the rotor 1 has a single lobe 6 the periphery of which is part of a circle with slight flattening to provide a bearing area. The rotor 2 may have a slot 16 the length of which may be chosen to control the point of opening of the point 23 between the pumping chamber and the outlet port 14 and hence the compression ratio. The area of the port 14 is variable by inserting plates 12. The rotors are balanced e.g. by means of holes 9 and weights 8 (Fig. 1 not shown). The lobe may be bolted on to the rotor as shown or to a cranked rotor shaft (Fig. 8 not shown) or be integral with the rotor. The compressor may have a rotary outlet valve the point of opening of which may be varied and a rotary by-pass valve may be provided (Fig. 6 not shown); the valves may be controlled by temperature, pressure or density.
