Abstract

943,886. Umbrellas. H. DULTGEN, and D. SCHUTTE. Feb. 23, 1962 [Feb. 24, 1961; May 27, 1961; Nov. 28, 1961], No. 7181/62. Heading A4P. An umbrella has spring elements 3, Fig. 1 mounted between the stretchers 8 and ribs 2 to bias them towards an umbrella open position. The umbrella crown 10 is provided with an abutment 9a to limit outward movement of the ribs. As shown in Fig. 6, the umbrella has telescopic ribs, and the stretchers 8 are hinged to the outer rib section 2a, two diametrically opposite spring elements, e.g. tension springs or elastic straps, being provided. One end of each spring 3 is secured to a pivot pin 4a rigidly attached to, or sliding in slot 7 in the hinge 6. The slot 7 may be extended into a notch in rib 2b so that during opening of the umbrella the pin 4a engages this notch and prevents telescoping of the rib sections 2a, 2b.
