An upwardly-closing umbrella comprises telescopic ribs 11 and a telescopic handle which, in a collapsed and shortened state of the umbrella, contains the shortened ribs with a cover 6 folded therearound, and the ribs being supported on the top end of the handle when the umbrella is opened. The cover is secured to the outer ends of the ribs by balls 9, and parts of the cover loosely encircle innermost sections of each rib. Inner ends of the ribs are secured to a member 12, which is slidable within the handle, by projections (13), Fig. 3 (not shown). The upper end of each handle section has a diverging mouth 7 and a restricted neck 14, the neck on the lower section frictionally co-operating with an enlarged lowerend part 15 of the lower handle section to enable the handle to be maintained extended. The ribs may be locked in the extended position by frictional engagement between internal and external frustoconical surfaces on the ends of the rib sections. The covering can be stretched taut or loosened by movement of one or two ribs only. The handle may be made of stainless steel, the ribs of a harder tempered steel and the covering from thinfilm plastics material. When closed, the umbrella is stated to resemble a fountain pen in shape and size one end of the handle being provided, with a clip for carrying the collapsed umbrella secured by the clip to clothing.
