1328220 Collapsible umbrellas KORTENBACH & RAUH 27 April 1971 [8 May 1970] 11632/71 Heading A4P An umbrella comprises a three-part telescopic stick 1 main slider 8 auxiliary slider 10, main struts 9 auxiliary struts 11, and shorterable ribs 3 each having an outermost part 3c pivoted at 5 to a middle part 3b slidable within an inermost part 3a and has means to prevent full extension of the ribs when the umbrella is closed. The vizer ends of rib parts 3b are fixed to huges 4 which slide on U-sectioned parts 3a and abut against collars 6 when the umbrella is opened. In a manually operable first embodiment, Figs.1, 2 (not shown) a stop (15) on the stick prevents downward movement of slider 10, which is above slider 8, when the umbrella is closed, so preventing full ribextension. The slider 8 has a longitudinal groove allowing it to ride over stop (15). In a manually operable second embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) one or two cords (16) between the crown 2 and slider 10, having a length less than the maximum length of travel of sections 3 b during extension, prevent full rib-extension when the umbrella is closed. In an automatically opening third embodiment wherein slider 8 is above slider 10 and an opening spring 14 is provided therebetween, one or two wires 17 extend from the crown 2 and have hooked ends 17a cooperating with pins 18 in U-section struts 9 when the umbrella is closed, to prevent full rib-extension. In an automatically opening fourth embodiment, Figs.8-10 (not shown) such full extension is prevented by one or two struts (20) each of which is pivoted to a strut 9 and to a member (19) sliding on a rib part 3a between a sliding hinge 4 and collar 6. When collapsed, the first embodiment may have a rectangular cross-section and the other embodiments may have a circular cross-section.
