An automatically-openable umbrella comprises a stick 1, a lower slider 13 pivotally connected to one end of a plurality of inextensible struts 12, the other ends of which are each pivotally connected by a pin 5b to a fixing member 4 secured to a rib 3, a latch located on a lower portion of the stick for retaining the slider in position when the umbrella is closed, an intermediate slider 10 between slider 13 and a top ring 2, which ring is secured to the stick 1 and pivotally attached to the inner ends of ribs 3, a plurality of extensible struts, each having one end pivoted to slider 10 and the other end pivotally attached by a pin 5a to the fixing member 4, a compression spring 11 on the stick between ring 2 and slider 10 for opening the umbrella when the latch 14 is released, and a spring 7 on each extensible strut tending to increase its length to maintain a cover 18 taut even when it expands on absorbing moisture. Each extensible strut comprises members 6 and 9 each with a slotted, or hollow cylindrical, portion intermediate its ends, and a spring 7 mounted on a rod 8 between hollow facing end portions of members 6 and 9, which end portions slidably receive end portions of rod 8. Alternatively the members 9 may be omitted, the inner ends of rods 8 being pivoted to slider 10. The slider 10 may be prevented from rotating on the stick 1 by a guide rod 17 engaging in a groove of slider 10. Downward movement of slider 10 is restricted by a transverse pin 15 in the stick, or by an outwardly projecting lower section of rod 17.
