Class 134 In an umbrella frame with telescopic ribs and stick, each in two parts, main struts pivoted to the outer parts of the ribs and to a main slider and auxiliary struts pivoted to the main struts and to an auxiliary slider located between the main slider and the umbrella crown, a stop is provided which limits movement of the auxiliary slider along the stick during the initial stage of opening the umbrella, the stop being released, to allow the auxiliary slider to move freely, by engagement of a part of the main slider with the stop after movement of the main slider towards the auxiliary slider. The stop may comprise a catch 26 which serves to lock the stick parts 10, 11 in the extended position and which engages in a slit 33 in the auxiliary slider 25. Movement of the auxiliary slider up the stick is checked by the catch 26 until this is pushed in by the funnelshaped extension 37 on the main slider 20, by which time the ribs have swung away from the stick and further telescoping of the rib parts is prevented. The catch is formed with an upper sloping edge, so that when the umbrella is closed movement of the auxiliary slider is not checked. In an alternative arrangement the stop comprises a spring-loaded pawl 41, Fig. 5, pivoted in a slit in the auxiliary slider 132, which engages in a longitudinal slit 44 in the upper stick part 111.
