Abstract

938,211. Processing radio-active waste. R. ALBERTI. March 29, 1961 [April 2, 1960; Sept. 22, 1960], No. 11579/61. Class 39 (4). Aqueous radio-active waste is introduced without stirring from below and within into a finely divided hydraulic binder contained in a mould, the mixture is allowed to set to a transportable block, and the block is subjected to a finishing treatment to increase its resistance to lixiviation. The binder may consist of Portland or aluminous cement, mixed, if desired, with gravel or heavy spar, and the concrete block is heated at about 1000‹ C. to form a sintered body. Alternatively an impregnating material may be introduced under reduced or increased pressure into the pores of the block. Suitable impregnating materials are self - hardening synthetic resins, for example liquid polystyrene, lacquers, synthetic fat-amino compounds, silicone resins, melted paraffin, liquid paraffin, silicone oil, or sodium silicate solution. Another method is to coat the block with a protective layer by spraying, painting, or immersion. As shown in Fig. 1, the liquid waste is added through funnel 2 and apertured tube 3 into the binder contained in mould 1 If the mould and tube are of a plastic, they can be burned away during the sintering process. In other illustrated forms of apparatus, the tube 3 is of spiral form or the mould contains several interconnected vertical perforated tubes. The impregnating material may be introduced through the tube 3 after the block has set. Specification 929,863 is referred to.
