Abstract

1324411 Moulding green cementitious articles UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 April 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1721/70 Heading B5A In a process for making a green cementitious article, cement powder, a water soluble organic binder, and a solvent for the binder are mixed to a slurry, formed into the desired shape and the solvent removed to produce a self supporting structure of cement particles bound by the organic binder. In an example, a slurry of Portland cement, polyethylene glycol and ethyl alcohol is cast on to a moving sheet of paper, shaped by a doctor blade, and dried to remove the alcohol solvent to produce a green sheet 1-75 mm. thick which can be cut and shaped to form an article e.g. a honeycomb structure which may then be hydrated to harden the cement. The method may be used to produce a fibre reinforced "pre preg" material having suitably aligned fibres of glass, carbon, metal, hair, jute, or synthetic polymer and cement bound by the organic binder into shaped pieces e.g. rods suitable for forming into a desired article before hardening. The binders and corresponding solvents used may be polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone/organic liquid; polyvinyl alcohol/ organic liquid; polyester/organic liquid, cellulose/organic liquid. The binder may be leached out, if desired, during the hydration step. If the organic binder is to remain in the hydrated article, it may contain a plasticizer to render the green sheet flexible. Reference is made to Specification 1,279,252 which disloses apparatus for forming the cementitious articles.
