Abstract

A cleansing agent containing a radiation-absorbent material having a specific gravity of at least 4 is used for cleaning and scrubbing vessels which are soiled with radioactive residues. The heavy material is preferably barite, but other substances referred to are magnetite, iron dust, lead dust, galena, cinnabar, bismuth subnitrate, and pulverized slags containing heavy metal oxides. The usual mechanically or chemically active agents may be mixed with the heavy material.ALSO:Finely divided or dissolved radioactive material is mixed with a finely divided radiation-absorbent material having a specific gravity of at least 4 in order that the radioactive material may be handled, stored, transported, or disposed of more easily and with less danger. The preferred radiation-absorbent material is dried barite sediment or sludge containing 80-90% BaSO4. Other materials referred to are heavy spar, magnetite, iron dust, lead dust, galena, cinnabar, bismuth subnitrate and pulverised slags containing heavy metal oxides. Radioactive sewage or waste water from atomic reactors may be absorbed by the barite which can be re-used after storage to allow the short-lived radiation to disappear. If the barite used is mixed with cement, solid blocks are formed which may be sunk in the sea. Liquid containing radioactive material in suspension or solution may be decontaminated by passing through the heavy material alone or mixed with filtering or ion-exchange material, e.g. asbestos, montmorillonite, fullers earth, or synthetic resins. Barite mixed with peat may be used in hospitals to absorb radioactively contaminated faeces.
