Abstract

In the parent patent the resistance to leaching of solidified bitumen procs. contg. radioactive materials is improved, in cases where the materials incorporated tend to increase the leachability, by (a) treating the solns. or slurries, before incorporation, with substances to reduce the tendency of the salts contained to take up water of crystallisation, (b) mixing the solns. etc. with liquid bitumen, bringing the water content down to =1 wt.% and, (c) pouring the bitumen-solids mixt. into inserts for the final storage. The improvement comprises using as inserts inorganic structural materials, coated r impregnated with bitumen or other hydrophobic materials. The method is a simple, economical way of storing radioactive waste. The leaching is reduced, even when substances are present which tend to cause leaching, e.g. detergents, and the product has good mechanical strength.
