A man-hole cover assembly comprises a lid or cover 2 hinged to one side of a frame 1 and a spring-loaded extensible stay A pivotally connected between the frame and the cover and arranged so that when the cover has been raised a certain distance the stay will become operative to counterbalance and then overcome the weight of the cover and thereby to retain it in the fully open position. The stay comprises two telescopic tubes 11, 12 containing a spring 13 and pivotally connected between a bracket 29 on the frame and an arm 16 depending from the cover, the pivot 15 being located, when the cover is closed, either on or below the line joining the pivot 14 with the hinge axis of the lid. A second similar stay B may be pivotally connected between a short arm 23 on the cover and an oblique depending arm 21 on the frame so as to act on the cover with a different leverage from that of the stay A. This is stated to ensure a more even opening and closing effort and to avoid snap closing. A safety catch 25 pivoted to the coyer engages beneath a stop lug 27 (not shown) on the frame to restrict the initial opening of the cover.
