The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges particularly for the doors of automobiles and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which will be substantially concealed from view when the door is closed.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a concealed hinge of the aforementioned character which is adapted for use on vehicle bodies having a curve or bulge therein from top to bottom.
Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a concealed hinge of the character described embodying novel actuating means whereby allowance is made for the curve or bulge of the body when the door is opened or closed.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a concealed hinge of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several Views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the -hinge in closed position, showing a portion of a door and frame or jamb in horizontal section.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the hinge in open position.
Figure 3 is a sectional View, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a detail view in elevation of the guide.
Figure 5 is a detail View in elevation of the jamb leaf which is slidably mounted in the guide.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a guide of suitable metal which is designated generally by the reference numeral I. The guide I comprises a plate 2 having a plurality of countersunk holes 3 therein for the reception of suitable securing elements for rigidly mounting said guide on the door frame or jarnb 4 of an automobile body. The plate 2 is further provided with a slot 5 the purpose of which will be presently set forth. The guide I further includes flanges 6 of angular cross section which are integral with the longitudinal edges of the plate 2.
Slidably mounted in the guide I is a jamb leaf 'I of suitable metal having a longitudinal slot 8 therein for communication with the slot 5 in the plate 2. Pivotally secured by a pin S to one end of the leaf 'I is a leaf Ill.
As illustrated to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the leaf IE! has formed therein a plurality of openings I I which accommodate suitable elements for rigidly securing said leaf I5] to the door I 2. Referring now to Fig. 1 cf the drawings, it will be seen that the door I2 is formed to accommodate the joint of the leaves 'l and I 0, as at I3. Fixed on the door leaf Il) is an arcuate camming arm I4 which extends through the elongated opening 8 in the slidable leaf 'I and is slidably engaged in the slot 5 of the guide I. It will be observed that the distance between the axis of the leaf I!) and the camming arm I4 increases toward the free end of the latter. The camming arm I4 also projects into the jamb 4 through an opening which is provided therefor in said jamb.
It is thought that the operation of the invention Will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. When the vehicle door is swung toward open position the arcuate camming arm I4, engaged in the slot 5, forces the leaf 1 outwardly in the guide I, thus shifting the door outwardly in a manner to clear the curve or bulge in the body. The elongated opening or slot 8 in the leaf 'I permits said leaf to slide in the guide I. Of course, when the door is closed the foregoing operation is reversed, the arcuate camming arm I4 pulling the leaf 'I inwardly in the guide I. The member I4 may be fixed on the leaf I0 in any suitable manner.
It is believed that the many advantages of a concealed automobile hinge constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A hinge of the class described comprising a stationary guide, a leaf slidably mounted in said guide, a leaf pivotally mounted on the first named leaf, and an arcuate camming arm fixed on the second named leaf and said arm being operatively engaged with means on the guide for shifting the first named leaf in said guide when the second named leaf swings on its pivot,
2. A hinge of the class described comprising a guide, said guide having a slot therein, a leaf slidably mounted in the guide, a leaf pivotally mounted on the first named leaf, and an arcuate camming arm fixed on the second named leaf and slidably engaged in the slot for shifting the first named leaf in the guide when the second named leaf swings on its pvot.
3. A hinge of the class described comprising a guide having a slot therein, a leaf slidably mounted in theguide and having an elongated opening therein communicating With the slot, a leaf pivotally mounted on the first named leaf, and an arcuate cainming arm fixed on the second named leaf and extending through the opening in the first named leaf and slidably engaged in the slot for shifting said first named leaf in the guide when the Second named leaf swings on its pivot.
4. A hinge of the class described comprising a stationary guide, said guide including a plate having a slot therein and opposed flanges of angular cross section on said plate, a leaf slidably mounted on the guide and retained by the anges, said leaf having an elongated opening therein communicating with the slot, a leaf pivotally mounted on one end of the first named leaf, and an arcuate camming arm fixed on the second named leaf and extending through the opening in the first named leaf and slidably engaged in the slot, said camming arm constituting means for shifting the first named leaf in the guide when the second named leaf swings on its pivot.
