Abstract

903,920. Boring earth &c. SALEM TOOL CO. June 2, 1961, No. 19957/61. Class 85. Apparatus for drilling horizontal holes comprises beams 1, 2 carrying rails 4, 5, a carriage 8 having rollers 6, 7 engaging the rails, a chuck carried by the carriage and driven through reduction gearing 24 by a motor 25, a rack 13, 14 between the beams having sockets 15, and a piston and cylinder assembly 20, 22 having one end pivoted to the carriage at 23 and the other end mounting a latch 16 for engagement with the sockets. An auger 44 is fitted in the chuck and passes through a guide 38 which may enclose a guide 40 for small augers. Auxiliary rails 11, 12 are fitted at the ends of the rails 4, 5 so that the carriage may be moved from the rails 4, 5 and separated from the beams. The motor and the piston and cylinder assembly are actuated by fluid supplied by a pump 30. The rack may be shaped so that the latch need not be lifted manually from the sockets.
