Abstract

799,023. Drilling long holes. TAYLOR & SONS (MANCHESTER), Ltd., F. July 29,1955 [Aug. 7, 1954], No. 23016/54. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A drilling or like machine for drilling deep holes in rock &c. comprises clutch means 56 which are operated when the load on the tool exceeds a predetermined amount. The drillmechanism is mounted in a casing formed from two rolled channel-sections 11 joined by fishplates 19, the sides having, holes punched therein for lightness, and the centre-section being strengthened by a sleeve 16 carrying mounting-trunnions 17. The fish-plates 19 are formed as channels to guide a drill-carriage 23 which is fed by a motor 18 rotating a screw 21. The drill-chuck 25 is rotated by a gear 26 meshing with a gear 28 keyed to the screw 21. A reversing clutch-pinion 30 carries dogs 32, 33 and is movable to engage dogs 35 fixed on the carriage, or dogs 34 on the chuck-spindle. The pinion 30 engages a feed-nut gear 36 so that when the dogs 33, 35 are engaged the drill is retracted, and when the dogs 32, 34 are engaged it is fed at a slower speed. The drill is steadied in use by a spring-pressed plate 40. When the drill is over-loaded, an electric torque-reactor 48 in circuit with the motor 18 rotates to move a chain 45 and turn a crank 44. The crank 44 is connected by a rod 43 with the sleeve 56 to operate the clutch 30. Specification 799,022 is referred to.
